No. 7 Sharks Reach Most Wins Since 2007 with Sunday Sweep of Eckerd

NSU produces the 11th sweep to reach 19 wins for only the second time

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 7 Nova Southeastern tennis team (19-2, 7-2 SSC) delivered its second commanding victory of the week, producing a Senior Day sweep of Sunshine State Conference foe Eckerd (6-14, 0-10 SSC) on Sunday morning at the NSU Tennis Complex. The win moves NSU to 19 victories for just the second time in program history. Now in sole ownership of the second-most-winning season for the program, the 2019 Sharks move past the 2015 squad and have racked up the most victories since 2007.

Though she was unable to compete against the Tritons on Sunday, senior Ana Navas was honored in a ceremony before the match. To date, she's earned a 28-12 singles and 31-11 record (including fall 2018 competition) during her two seasons with the Sharks.

Doubles
  • Though the Sharks played shorthanded on Sunday, NSU wasted little time getting to work against the Tritons, as the tandem of sophomore Alexandra Yeardley and freshman Caitlyn Khan defeated Cassidy Lear and Angelina Kossoff, 6-0, in the third doubles flight.
  • Junior Sarah Wardenburg and sophomore Ivana Djordjevic followed with a 6-3 second-flight win over Bailey Koronich and Theo Schultz to deliver the team doubles point.
  • Appearing together at No. 1 doubles for the first time, freshman Diane Follin-Arbelet and junior Isabella Lowrey closed out Taylor Selby and MaryAnn Aaron, 6-3.
Singles
  • Wardenburg produced the first of four straight-sets singles victories from the second flight, finishing first with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Aaron.
  • Lowrey followed from the six spot, producing her own 6-0, 6-0 over Kossoff.
  • Securing the NSU team win, Djordjevic also went 6-0, 6-0 over Koronich at No. 3 singles.
  • Notching the last of the set sweeps, Follin-Arbelet defeated Selby in her second win in as many appearances at No. 1 singles.
  • Khan defeated Schultz 6-3, 6-1 in the fours and Yeardley closed out the perfect 7-0 team sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 fifth-flight victory over Lear.
From Coach Doug Neagle
"Nice way to finish our home schedule and hopefully we made it special for our senior Ana Navas," Neagle said. "Ana has had an amazing career here at NSU and she isn't done yet. We are hoping to extend her college career as long as we can in the postseason. For today's match, I'm really proud of Diane's effort along with Sarah."

Up Next: The regular season closes at 3:00 p.m. next Tuesday at No. 2 Barry's Buccaneer Tennis Center in Miami Shores. The Sunshine State Conference Championships are scheduled for April 26-28 at the IMG Academy Tennis Complex in Bradenton.
