HOW IT HAPPENED:
Starter Gabe Rodriguez set the Sharks on a solid path early, exiting the first of his two scoreless innings on just eight pitches. The offense took the cue, as the first four NSU batters reached base, three on singles. Amidst the group,
Garrett Wolforth pushed an RBI single through the right side and
Bryan Diaz doubled up for the Sharks in the frame with a sacrifice fly for the early lead.
Brandon Chinea reached on a bunt single and not only moved all the way over on an a sailed throw by the PBA third baseman, the shortstop went for broke and scored on the play for the 3-0 advantage.
Back up in the third, the Sharks loaded up the bases, setting the table for a
Mike Rojas line shot roped over the second baseman to plate
Christian Demby and
Samuel Duran. With runners aboard, NSU made the most of another PBA error, as
Daniel Irisarri laid down a bunt attempt, but reliever Tyler Hawks overshot the first baseman. Irisarri broke for second and third as the ball lodged in the right field tarp, overtaking home as the second baseman missed the mark to third – Diaz and Rojas also first scored on the wild series of events.
In the top of the fourth, the Sailfish changed the trajectory of the game with a grand slam from Andreas Papageorge that halved the Sharks' advantage. RBI singles for Sean Houck and Ramon Machado cut it down to two runs.
After the Sailfish handed NSU a pair of hit batters to open the fourth and a Duran sac bunt attempt forced PBA into another error, scoring Wolforth and setting up a big NSU response. Demby scored on a wild pitch. An RBI bunt single for Irisarri sent Duran to the plate and and an RBI walk drawn by
Andrew Labosky pushed the NSU lead back to six runs.
Reliever
Jarret Krzyzanowski stepped to the mound for the Sharks in the fifth after
Anthony Difede shut the door on the Sailfish run in the fourth, Setting himself up for the win, Krzyzanowski (W, 2-2) kicked off a tight defensive push for the Sharks that saw three runners left aboard and two double plays across four innings, as he handed off the ball to
Brock Minich and
Duncan Pastore - before
Gil Torres worked the Sharks out of a ninth-inning jam with 2-of-3 batters downed swinging en route to his first save and the 12-8 NSU win.
