HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Sharks were aggressive early, with nine shots in the first 14 minutes, before they finally broke through in the 18th minute when Gaby Moreira bounced a shot attempt over the keeper and into the net from the left wing.
  • Chama Silva doubled the lead less than five minutes later on a free kick from 35 yards out.
  • Nicole Staley scored the third and final goal of the opening half, delivering a shot into the left corner in the 33rd minute.
  • After 35-minute scoreless stretch, Hannah Christophe got the scoring started back up again with the first of four second-half goals in a span of under 17 minutes. In the 68th, Christophe received a pass from Morgan Masters at the top of the box, hitting the right corner of the net.
  • In the 75th minute, the FNU goalkeeper bobbled an Olivia Graham shot into the goal to give the Sharks a 5-0 lead.
  • Five minutes after that, Kaitlyn Chomko became the sixth different Shark to score, off a cross from Graham and Brittany Hoffman.
  • The Sharks tacked on one more goal in the 84th, when Jessica Bonenclark sent a corner kick Moreira's way, who headed it in for her second score of the match.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The seven goals scored by the Sharks are a new record under head coach John Constable, who began his fifth season at the helm with this match. It was the program's highest-scoring total, as well as their largest margin of victory and largest shutout victory, since September 23, 2014, when they defeated Florida Memorial by a score of 8-0. Sierra Lelii had the first multi-goal performance of her record-setting career on that day, notching six points with two goals and two assists. Julia Nytorp and Enfiniti Stephens, who came in as a reserve, also scored two goals each, while Sarah Keville and Kelsey McCusker both added a goal and an assist of their own.
  • The Sharks were two shots short of matching the all-time program record of 52, set on Halloween night in 1998, when they shutout Northwood in a surprisingly low-scoring game, 4-0. The 20 shots on goal were also the highest total since 22 in a 9-0 victory over Johnson & Wales on September 14, 2011.
  • Moreira became the first player with two goals in her Shark debut since Sini Laaksonen produced half of the team's scoring in a 4-1 season-opening victory against Webber on September 1, 2016.
  • The Sharks improve to 2-0 all-time against Florida National. The two teams faced off for the first time on September 21 of last season, with the Sharks jumping out to a 3-0 lead, before holding on to win 3-2.
 STATS OF THE NIGHT:
  • Of the 22 different players – not including keepers – who saw time on the field, 16 of them recorded at least one shot, with Christophe and Emma Heikkila leading the way at 10 and 7, respectively. Meanwhile, 10 Sharks logged at least one point, led by Moreira's four and Graham's three.
  • The Sharks attempted 27 shots in the first half, with nine on goal, and 23 more after halftime, of which 11 were on target.
  • The defense held strong, not allowing a single shot by the Conquistadors, with nary even an opportunity until a corner kick with 3:39 remaining in the match.
  • Shannon Hearty played the entire first half in net to earn the victory, while Natalie Robayna, Rachel Conomea and Anna Keffer combined to close out the second half. For Hearty, her perfect 45 minutes of play runs her scoreless streak up to over 279 consecutive minutes, with her last goal allowed coming at Barry on September 12 of last year. She also started last year's match against Florida National, keeping them scoreless for 69:31.
UP NEXT:
The Sharks will continue their six-match homestand to begin the season on Saturday, when they face Florida Memorial at 7:00 p.m. In the all-time series, the Sharks lead 5-0, outscoring the Lions 23-1 in the five matches.
