NSU Mercy Rules Queens (N.Y) Twice To Extend Win Streak to Eight

Sharks tally first run rule wins of the season and most runs in a game

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team showed no mercy on Friday night as the Sharks run ruled the Queens College Knights, 8-0 and 13-2, in a non-conference doubleheader at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME ONE - 5 INN.):

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 1ST | Sydney Lageyre led off with a walk, stealing second base before a passed ball pushed her to third. The next batter, Mya Maddox brought her home on a sacrifice bunt, giving the Sharks an early 1-0 edge.
 
BOTTOM 3RD | With the bases loaded, an RBI-single by Sam Sisco made it 2-0 for the Sharks as leadoff batter Alexis Smith was brought home. After a pop out by Tia Williams, Alez Suzuki reached on a fielder's choice as a speedy Lageyre crossed the plate for a 3-0 Shark lead. The next batter, Juliana Speranza, sent a two-RBI double deep into left center field, scoring both Maddox and Alex Suzuki, pushing NSU's advantage to 5-0. A single by the middle by Anina Fernandez pushed Speranza to third before an RBI-single by Hayley Hendricks recorded the last run of the inning, as Nova Southeastern went up 6-0.
 
BOTTOM 4TH | An inning later, the Sharks tallied their two mercy rule game-winning runs as Maddox used an RBI-bunt to score Lageyre and an infield single by Williams and a throwing error by the Knights brought Maddox home, ending the game at 8-0 in favor of NSU.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
 
  • Lageyre was the lone Shark with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored. She also stole four bases.
  • Sisco, Williams and Speranza all finished 1-for-3, with Sisco and Williams recording an RBI apiece while Speranza notched two RBI and scored once.
  • Fernandez and Hendricks were each 1-for-2 as Hendricks chalked one RBI. Maddox was also 1-for-2, finishing with two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Emily Hess earned the win, allowing only one hit and striking out four in the shutout.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
 
  • The Sharks didn't allow a Knights baserunner until the top of the fourth inning.
  • Lageyre's four stolen bases were not only a season-high, but a career-high.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 1ST | Leading off with a single up the middle and stealing second, Lageyre advanced to third on a single by Maddox before an overthrown pickoff attempt by the Knights rolled to the left center wall and allowed both baserunners to score and give NSU a 2-0 lead. After back-to-back singles and steals by Sisco and Williams and a ground out by Suzuki, an RBI-ground out by Fernandez scored Sisco before an RBI-single by Speranza plated Williams for a 4-0 Shark advantage.
 
TOP 3RD | The Knights tallied their first run of the evening as a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by NSU allowed Gabby Vicidomini to score, bringing the score to 4-1.
 
BOTTOM 3RD | 13 Sharks came up to the plate as the home team exploded for nine runs on nine hits in the bottom of the third. Loading up the bases with a bunt single by Sisco, Speranza used a sacrifice fly to score Sisco before an RBI single by Hendricks scored both Suzuki and Williams for a 7-1 Shark lead. After a single by Alexis Smith put runners on the corners, three-consecutive RBI-singles by Lageyre, Maddox and Sisco pushed NSU's advantage to 10-1. An infield single by Williams loaded the bases once more, before a single up the middle by Suzuki and brought home both Maddox and Sisco to make it 12-1. The final run of the game for the Sharks came on an error by QC's shortstop, allowing Williams to score to push it to 13-1.
 
TOP 5TH | After a scoreless inning for either team, Queens recorded the last run of the game as Marisa Sagona singled to right field, bringing home leadoff batter Jenny Murphy who reached on a Shark error.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
 
  • Sisco showed off in tonight's second game, finishing 3-for-3 scoring three times and tallying one RBI.
  • Lageyre, Maddox, Williams and Suzuki all registered two hits in the nightcap, as Suzuki finished with two RBI, and Lageyre and Maddox with one. Williams scored three times.
  • Speranza and Hendricks also tallied two RBI each, finishing 1-for-2 and 1-for-3, respectively.
  • Smith was 1-for-3 and scored once and Fernandez registered two RBI.
  • Savannah Foster moved to 8-3 on the season with her three innings of work, striking out five while allowing one run on two hits. Maddox finished the game in the circle, pitching her first 2.0 innings of season, striking out two while giving up one run on one hit.
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
 
  • Game two's 13 runs were the most tallied by the Sharks this season.
  • Today's run-rule wins were the first of the season for the Sharks.
 
UP NEXT
 
Nova Southeastern will play once again at the AD Griffin Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon, with a doubleheader against West Liberty. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
