HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 2
nd | The Sharks squandered one of their limited offensive chances in the bottom of the second inning. After consecutive singles by
Madison Fine and
Sidney Swantic to lead off the frame, both moved into scoring position with one out following a Burke sacrifice bunt. However, a strikeout and foulout in the ensuing at-bats kept the ball game knotted at 0-0.
TOP 5
th | As she's done for most of the season, NSU starter
Ashley Connor kept the Barry offense off-balance for much of the night. The freshman ran into a bit of trouble after plunking the first two batters in the fifth, yet settled down to retire the next three to escape the jam without any damage done.
BOT 6
th | Having stranded seven runners overall on Friday, the Sharks finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back singles by
Allie Janowiak and Fine sparked the offense before the bases became loaded after a Barry throwing error on a Swantic sacrifice attempt. Facing a 1-0 count with one out, Burke took advantage of a pulled-in Barry infield by flaring a single just out of the reach of the second baseman to score Janowiak and put the Sharks in front. After a strikeout notched the second out of the inning, Smith missed a grand slam by mere inches, ricocheting a triple off the very top of the left-field fence to extend the lead to 4-0.
Sydney Lageyre would tack on another run with an infield single, as NSU all the sudden found itself up 5-0 heading into the seventh.
TOP 7
th | Barry loaded the bases in the seventh. Still, Connor was able to preserve the shutout with her sixth and final strikeout of the evening.
