Sharks Hit 15 Threes, Defeat Barry

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Women's Basketball team picked up its 21st win on Wednesday evening, defeating rival Barry University 97-65. The Sharks were led by a dominating three-point performance and 20 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds from Madison Frederick. In the Sunshine State Conference win, NSU shot 63.2% from the field and hit 15 three-pointers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter – The Sharks got off to a slow start, falling down 4-0 before Madison Frederick and Kyarrah Grant helped NSU go on a 7-0 run. Sarei McGill scored on back-to-back possessions to put Nova Southeastern up 11-8 with four and a half minutes left in the quarter. The Sharks gained momentum, going on a 13-4 run with three-pointers from Kyarrah Grant, Mackenzie Steele and Zeyno Seren. As the quarter ended, India Shepherd hit a half-court buzzer beater that put NSU into the second quarter with a 31-17 advantage.

Second Quarter – Nova Southeastern stayed hot, opening the second quarter with back-to-back three balls from Kyannah Grant and Steele. After two scoreless minutes, a layup from McGill and a three-pointer from Conley gave the Sharks a 44-23 lead with 5:30 remaining in the half. With just over 3 minutes left, NSU took a 49-26 lead after a free throw from McGill and layups from Kyannah Grant and A'lexus Bryant. Frederick took the game over, hitting four consecutive three-pointers in the last two minutes of the half. NSU would go into halftime with a 61-32 lead, its largest of the game.

Third Quarter – Picking up right where she left off, Frederick opened the half with her fifth consecutive three-pointer. NSU picked up six points on three consecutive layups from Kyannah Grant, Kyarrah Grant and Emma Krause. The Sharks jumped put to a 73-41 lead after a pair of free throws from Shepherd. Nova Southeastern ended the quarter on an 8-0 run, with Conley and McGill both making a pair of layups. After a strong third quarter, NSU went into the fourth quarter with an 81-47 lead.

Fourth Quarter – The Sharks opened the quarter with Conley and Kyarrah Grant each making a three-pointer and a layup. McGill also knocked in a pair of free throws. True freshman Delaney Wolfe hit her second field goal of the season on a mid-range from the right side. Shepherd scored her 11th points of the game on a tough layup that helped NSU close out a 97-65 win over Barry.


STATS OF THE NIGHT

- The Sharks shot 75.9% (22-29) from the field in the first half.

- NSU shot 12-17 (70.6%) from beyond the arc in the first two quarters.

- Frederick scored 20 points on 87.5% from the field and 100% from three.

- Four Sharks reached double figures: Frederick (20), Kyarrah Grant (14), McGill (13) and Conley (12).

UPCOMING

The Sharks will open a two-game road trip and visit Tampa on Saturday, Feb. 18. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
