Sharks Split Doubleheader, Drop Series Against Saint Leo

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern Sharks Baseball team split the doubleheader, but dropped the series against the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday afternoon. NSU defeated SLU 5-2 in the first half of the twin-billing, as Cooper Omans worked into the ninth inning and Ryan Cainzos drove in four runs. The Sharks dropped the rubber-match 4-3, losing the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game One 

Top of the First – Omans worked around an error and a single, recording back-to-back outs and settled himself into the contest.  

Bottom of the First – Adam Frank began his day by lining a triple to the right-center field gap and later scored on an RBI groundout from Duncan Pastore.  

From the second through the fourth innings, Omans recorded eight consecutive outs, holding the Lions off the scoreboard.  

Top of the Fifth – Saint Leo broke through with an RBI single, tying the game at 1-1.  

Bottom of the Fifth – The Sharks responded with a run of their own, reclaiming the lead, with an RBI double from Cainzos, putting the score at 2-1.  

Bottom of the Eighth – With the bases loaded, Cainzos stepped up to the plate and doubled down the third base line, driving in three runs and providing NSU with valuable insurance runs.  

Top of the Ninth – Saint Leo scored their second run on a wild pitch, but Anthony Karoly closed out the 5-2 victory for Nova Southeastern.  

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game Two  

Bottom of the Second – NSU got on the board first in the series finale, as Stephen Schissler hit his second home run of the season to put the Sharks ahead 2-0.  

Top of the Third – Saint Leo tied the game the following half inning, plating a pair of runs to put the score at 2-2.  

Top of the Fifth – The game remained tied until the Lions scored two runs following an error by the Sharks, taking a 4-2 lead.  

Bottom of the Fifth – NSU cut into the Lions lead with a sacrifice fly, as Kristian Noriega brought in Cainzos.  

Bottom of the Ninth – Cainzos led off the final frame by reaching base off a hit by pitch and advanced to third on a groundout. The Sharks were unable to tie the game and dropped the series finale 4-3. 

UPCOMING 

NSU takes on Palm Beach Atlantic in a non-conference midweek matchup on Tuesday, April 4, in West Palm Beach. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
