#25 Sharks Take Down #5 Blazers, Advance to South Region Championship

VALDOSTA, GA. - The #25 ranked Nova Southeastern women's basketball team returns to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since the 2018-19 season. NSU took down #5 ranked and number one seeded Valdosta State on Saturday evening, snapping the Blazers 27-game win streak and undefeated home record. Strong offensive efforts from Nicole Scales (16 points) and Alana Ellis (16 points) propelled the Sharks to victory over Valdosta.

How it Happened

First Half – The Blazers came out hot taking the early 14-5 lead. NSU answered with buckets from Morgan Kane, Kailyn Terrell, and Jess Moors cutting the Sharks deficit to three heading into the second quarter. Ellis jumpstarted a 10-0 Shark run to kick off the quarter, pushing NSU ahead 23-14. Both teams continued to battle it out throughout the rest of the quarter as the Sharks held onto a 29-18 lead going into the break.  

Second Half – VSU clawed their way back cutting the Sharks lead to three with 6:10 left to play in the third quarter. Alana Ellis then came down and knocked down a big three-pointer to put the Sharks back up six points. NSU continued to put pressure on the Blazers towards the end of the quarter, maintaining a 44-38 lead heading into the final frame. VSU brought the score to 46-44 after a flurry of buckets but the Sharks didn't back down. Shortly after, six consecutive points from India Shepherd and Kane put the Sharks up 55-45 ultimately leading NSU to a 69-58 victory over #5 ranked Valdosta State.

The No. 25 Nova Southeastern Sharks Women's Basketball team will return to action Monday, March 18th in the South Region Championship against number three-seeded and fellow SSC member Tampa.
