NSU Athletics Year In Review

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Nova Southeastern Athletics continued the recent trend of being one of the most dominant athletic departments in NCAA Division II throughout the 2023-24 athletic year. The Sharks added two more NCAA national championships (Women's Swimming and Women's Tennis) bringing the departmental total to 13, claimed eight NCAA individual national titles, 28 student-athletes were recognized as All-Americans, NSU athletics claimed four Sunshine State Conference Championships, and four teams were ranked No. 1 in their respective national polls – Women's Swimming, Men's Basketball, Women's Golf and Women's Tennis. The success culminated in an eighth-place finish in the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup, the second consecutive top-10 finish for the department.

Volleyball 

  • Third consecutive NCAA Regional Tournament appearance 
  • Nadia Lindner enjoyed one of the most prolific single seasons in program history 
  • AVCA First-Team All-American (First in program history) 
  • AVCA South Region Player of the Year (First in program history) 
  • D2 CCA South Region Player of the Year (First in program history) 
  • Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year (First in program history) 
  • First-Team AVCA All-South Region 
  • First-Team D2 CAA All-South Region 
  • First-Team All-Sunshine State Conference 
  • Taylor Stockman became the first Sharks Volleyball player to earn All-American honors in two consecutive seasons in 14 years.  
  • Stockman also was recognized with Second-Team All-Sunshine State Conference honors, D2 CCA South Region and AVCA All-American honorable mention recognition.  
  • Madison Cook was named to the Second-Team All-Sunshine State Conference 

Women's Soccer  

  • Qualified for NCAA South Region Tournament for second consecutive year 
  • Advanced to Sweet 16 of NCAA Tournament 
  • Placed five student-athletes on the All-Sunshine State Conference Team 
  • Luana Grabias (First Team) 
  • Emma Brown (First Team) 
  • Sofia Suarez (Second Team) 
  • Tabea Schütt (Second Team)

  • Grabias and Brown named to D2 CCA All-South Region Second Team 

Men's Soccer 

  • Three student-athletes recognized with All-Conference honors

  • All three were also recognized by the D2 CCA, earning South Region recognition

Cross Country 

  • Leena Saidi set a program record at the NCAA South Region Championship Meet, qualifying for the NCAA National Championship, recording a time of 20:48.20 

Women's Swimming 

  • Won the program's second consecutive NCAA National Championship 
  • Earned seven individual national championships 
  • Emily Trieschmann – 800 Freestyle Relay; 1000-Freestyle; 200-Freestyle; 500-Freestyle; 1650-Freestyle 
  • Rafaela Raurich – 800-Freestyle Relay; 100-Butterfly; 200-Butterfly 
  • May Lowy – 800-Freestyle Relay 
  • Emilia Ronningdal – 800-Freestyle Relay 
  • Trieschmann cemented herself as the greatest swimmer in program history 
  • 10-time NCAA Individual National Champion 
  • 12-time Sunshine State Conference Individual Champion 
  • 14-time CSCAA All-American 
  • Two-time Sunshine State Conference Female Swimmer of the Year 
  • Two-Time DII Honda Athlete of the Year Finalist 
  • Two-Time CSCAA Division II Swimmer of the Year 
  • 2022-23 & 2023-24 Sunshine State Conference Female Athlete of the Year 
  • Two-Time Sunshine State Conference Championships Swimmer of the Meet 
  • Won the program's fourth consecutive Sunshine State Conference Championship 
  • NSU recorded 1,025 points 
  • Combined to win 11 Sunshine State Conference individual titles 
  • Head Coach Ben Hewitt was recognized as the Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive year, sixth time overall in his career.  
  • 12 student-athletes recognized as CSCAA All-Americans 
  • Ranked No. 1 in Division II to begin 2023-24 season 

Men's Swimming 

  • Finished 8th at the NCAA National Championship Meet 
  • Marcel Snitko won the 200-Freestyle NCAA national title 
  • Seven student-athletes recognized as CSCAA All-Americans 
  • Combined to win six Sunshine State Conference individual titles 
  • Ranked as high as tenth in the CSCAA Coaches' Poll 

Men's Golf 

  • Ranked as high as No. 9 in Division II 
  • Won three events during the 2023-24 season 
  • Citrus Intercollegiate Invitational (-7) 
  • First Federal Southeastern Collegiate Challenge (-12) 
  • Battle at the Shores (-17) 
  • Mike Hay became the sixth NSU Men's Golfer to win the Sunshine State Conference Championship Tournament 
  • Hay was also recognized as the Sunshine State Conference Men's Golfer of the Year, the fourth Shark to earn that distinction 
  • Head Coach Joey Marino was honored as the Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year, the fourth all-time and first since 2015 
  • Three student-athletes were recognized on Sunshine State Conference teams 
  • Mike Hay (First Team) 
  • Joseba Torres (First Team) 
  • Will McGhie (Third Team) 
  • Joseba Torres represented NSU at the NCAA National Championship Tournament 
  • Torres placed sixth (-5/69/69/70/208) and was the highest finishing individual player at the tournament.  
  • Joseba Torres and Mike Hay were both recognized as Second-Team GCAA All-Americans 

Women's Golf 

  • Held the No. 1 ranking in NCAA Division II for five consecutive weeks 
  • Won four events during the 2023-24 season 
  • South Region Preview (+19) 
  • Saint Leo Invitational (-1) 
  • Lady Moc Classic (+18) 
  • Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational (+61) 
  • Ellen Andersson and Maia Samuelsson both recorded individual tournament wins during the 2023-24 season 
  • Andersson won the first two events of the year – South Region Preview (-2/69/72/73/214) and the Saint Leo Invitational (-5/71/68/72/211)  
  • Samuelsson was victorious at the World Golf Invitational (+1/70/74/73/217) 
  • NSU placed fifth at the South Region Tournament, qualifying for the NCAA National Championship 
  • Andersson and Samuelsson were both recognized as WGCA All-Americans

Women's Tennis 

  • Won the program's first NCAA Division II National Championship 
  • Set a program record for wins in a single season (27)

  • Won the NCAA South Region Tournament for the third consecutive season

  • Shane Hunter (First Team & All-Defensive Team) 
  • Isaiah Fuller (Second Team & All-Defensive Team) 
  • Shane Hunter named to NABC All-South District Team

Rowing 

Track 

  • Will Watson placed second at the Spartans Open in the 1500-meter (4:17.48) 
  • Maggie Ragsdale finished second in the 400-meter hurdles at the Spartans Invite (1:24.06) 
  • Bella Butler placed second in the 800-meter at the Spartans Invite (2:20.37) 
  • Jonathan Furio finished second in the 2000-meter Steeplechase at the UCF Black and Gold Invitational (7:44.16) 
  • Marcus Tortorella won the 3000-meter run at the Black and Gold Invitational, finishing in 9:09.24, while David Mahnke placed second (9:21.72) 
  • Tortorella followed with another win in the 3000-meters at the Miami Hurricanes Invitational (9:06.12) and Ethan Miller finished second (9:57.90).  
  • Eden Toal (2nd/4:46.19), Ally Jakubiak (3rd/4:47.47), Megan Winterbottom (4th/4:50.98) and Leena Saidi (5th/4:51/13) all placed within the top-five in the 1500-meter at the Hurricane Invitational.  
  • Bella Butler, Amanda Stone, Megan Winterbottom and McKinzie Winget set a school record in the 4 x 800 relay (9:22.95) during the Keiser Twilight Invitational 
  • The Sharks dominated the STU Open, winning six events  
  • Maggie Ragsdale – 3000-meter steeplechase (13:43.27) 
  • Eden Toal – 1500-meter (4:48.56) 
  • Bella Butler – 800-meter (2:15.60) 
  • Leena Saidi – 5000-meter (17:58.56) 
  • Melissa Mitjans – High Jump (1.57m) 
  • David Mahnke – 1500-meter (4:02.11)
