Sharks Finish Series Sweep Against Saint Leo

FT. LAUDERDALE, FL. - The Nova Southeastern Sharks Baseball team finished off a three-game series sweep against the Saint Leo Lions in Sunshine State Conference play. NSU earned the series win following a 10-6 victory in the second game of the series and earned the sweep by defeating the Lions 9-1 in the finale.

How it Happened
Game Two

  • To open up the scoring in the first inning, Boris Pena grounded out to the pitcher, bringing home Justin Wachs and putting the Sharks on the board.
  • In the second inning, Zeth Rodriguez lined a double down the left field line, scoring JC Hernandez to extend NSU's lead 2-0.
  • Hernandez singled in the third inning and an error at second base helped NSU add another run on the board, scoring Pena. Nick Rodriguez followed up with a single of his own with Jack Cue crossing the plate. 4-0
  • The fourth inning saw NSU erupt for three runs with Xavier Moronta's lead off walk, Roy Quevedo's RBI triple, a Pena sacrifice fly, and Jorge DeGoti's infield single driving in Cue. 7-0 
  • In the fifth inning, Moronta crushed a two-run double down the right field line, and Cue followed with an RBI single to push NSU's lead to double digits. 10-0
  • Saint Leo finally got on the board in the sixth inning, as Amai Rivera-Martinez drove in a run with a clean single to right field. 10-1
  • The Lions showed potential for a rally, including two sacrifice RBIs and a three-run homer by Ryan Crivello to narrow the gap to 10–6.
  • Anthony Karoly started the game with three shutout innings recording seven strikeouts. The Sharks then saw Chris Perez (3.0 IP), Tyler Venegas (1.0 IP) and Kader Rabagh (2.0 IP) in relief. 

How it Happened
Game Three

  • In the first inning, Ronny Medina was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Joel Cabrera for the opening run and an early 1–0 lead.
  • During the third inning, Medina reached on a fielder's choice that erased Roy Quevedo at second but still brought Boris Pena across the plate to double the lead 2-0.
  • In the sixth inning, Zeth Rodriguez came through with a sharp single to left field, driving in Medina and Quevedo to make it 4–0.
  • Later in the sixth inning, Xavier Moronta added to the offensive surge with a well-hit single to left, scoring Rodriguez and Anthony Stinson who singled earlier in the inning for a 6–0 NSU advantage.
  • The seventh inning saw Saint Leo get on the board when Ryan Crivello grounded out to shortstop, allowing Thomas DeBrower to score on an unearned run.
  • In the eighth inning, Moronta delivered again, smashing a triple to the gap in left-center to bring home Justin Wachs who singled earlier in the inning and Richard Benitez who walked.
  • Still in the eighth inning, Boris Pena lined a single to left field, driving in Moronta and sealing a strong offensive performance with a 9–1 score.
  • Federico Zapata took home the win for the Sharks pitching his second complete game of the season, the first nine inning complete game since 2023. Zapata totaled a career high in innings pitched and strikeouts (7) he improves to 6-1 on the season
