Sharks Wrap Up Weeklong Road Trip with 3-2 Record

The Nova Southeastern University baseball team completed their week long road trip to the University of West Florida and the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a 3-2 record.

How it Happened

  • In the first game against West Florida, the Sharks gave freshman Miguel Diaz his first career start. 
  • The Argonauts tallied the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, taking a quick 1-0 lead over the Sharks. 
  • In the top of the second inning Nick Rodriguez worked a walk with one out in the inning before Jack Cue propelled the Sharks into the lead on a two-run home run (3), putting the Sharks ahead 2-1. 
  • Miguel Diaz finished off the next two innings allowing only two base runners and no runs. 
  • Ricky Gonzalez entered the game for the Sharks in the bottom of the fourth inning. 
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning the Argonauts broke through and regained the lead by totaling four runs on three hits as they took a 5-2 lead. 
  • The Sharks were unable to rally late in the shortened game, falling 5-2 to West Florida in game one of the double-header.

How it Happened

  • In the second game of the double-header, the Sharks turned to Federico Zapata
  • Federico Zapata once again got off to a blazing start on the mound, allowing only two base runners through his first four innings of work. Keeping the shortened game a shutout for both sides. 
  • The Argonauts offense erupted in the bottom of the fifth inning, totaling four runs on five hits and leading the Sharks 4-0. 
  • The Sharks were held off the scoreboard through their final two frames, dropping the second game of the double-header with a 4-0 final score.

How it Happened

  • The Sharks journeyed to Auburndale for a three-game set in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. 
  • In the first game of the invitational the Sharks deployed Nick Manning for the start against the Wilmington Wildcats. 
  • The Wildcats jumped onto the scoreboard in the top of the first with a pair of hits as the took a 1-0 lead over the Sharks. 
  • In the bottom of the first the Sharks put the first three batters of the inning on base, as Nick Rodriguez and Roy Quevedo each reached on walks and Sebastian Garavito singled. 
  • With one out in the inning Emilio Gonzalez tied the game with a bases loaded walk, followed by an RBI single by Jack Cue, the Sharks took an almost immediate 2-1 lead. 
  • The Sharks capitalized on a defensive miscue, pushing across another run and extending the lead to 3-1. With two outs in the inning Anthony Stinson delivered a two-run single through the right side of the infield to pull the Sharks ahead 5-1.  
  • With Anthony Stinson on base, Michael Arnold was hit by a pitch before Nick Rodriguez cleared the bases with a two-run triple to deep right field, capping off a seven-run inning for the Sharks as they led the Wildcats 7-1. 
  • In the bottom of the third inning Michael Arnold led off with a well-earned walk, before Sebastian Garavito lashed a base hit to right field which brought in Michael Arnold, putting the Sharks lead at 8-1. 
  • The Sharks offense continued to apply pressure quickly, as Jorge DeGoti and Jack Cue each tallied hits to open the bottom of the fourth inning. Brandon Mon grounded out to bring in Jorge DeGoti, and Anthony Stinson smashed a double to left field to bring around Jack Cue, which brought the Sharks lead to 10-1. 
  • Nick Manning continued his stellar work on the mound as he blanked the Wildcats for five consecutive innings. 
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning the Sharks saw Roy Quevedo, Jorge DeGoti, and Joel Cabrera all reach with one out to load the bases, with two outs in the inning Brandon Mon brought in the final run of the game by working a walk, as the Sharks picked up the win over the Wildcats with an 11-1 final score.

How it Happened

  • In the second game of the invitational the Sharks turned to Carlos Colunga against the Winona State Warriors. 
  • Both starters got off the strong starts, blanking the opposing lineups through the first two innings. 
  • In the top of third inning the Sharks put the first two batters on base, as Nick Rodriguez and Michael Arnold reached on a base hit and a hit by pitch. With two outs in the inning, Jorge DeGoti reached on an error that brought in Michael Arnold, and Ty Torti reached on an error that brought in Jorge DeGoti, putting the Sharks ahead 2-0 on the miscues. 
  • In the bottom half of the inning the Warriors pushed across their first run of the game on a hit and an error, cutting the Sharks lead in half at 2-1. 
  • Both pitching staffs held strong, keeping the score at 2-1 through the sixth inning. 
  • Nick Rodriguez led off the top of the seventh inning with a single and a stolen base, quickly reaching third base on a wild pitch. After a walk to Roy Quevedo and a pitching change by the Warriors, Jorge DeGoti delivered a base hit to centerfield to put the Sharks lead back to two runs, as the Sharks led 3-1 late in the game. 
  • The Sharks bullpen group of Ricky Gonzalez, Frank Billisi, and Miguel Diaz (SV, 1) were stellar, allowing one hit, one walk, and striking out six as the Sharks secured the victory over the Warriors with a 3-1 final score.

How it Happened

  • In the final game of the invitational the Sharks sent Federico Zapata out for the start against the Minnesota State Mavericks. 
  • The Mavericks opened the scoring with a leadoff triple and a ground out in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead over the Sharks. 
  • In the bottom of the third inning Dakota Jones led off with a base hit to right field, followed by Joel Cabrera reaching on an error that put the runners on second and third. Nick Rodriguez brought in Dakota Jones on a base hit, tying the game at 1-1. 
  • In the bottom of the fifth Dakota Jones once again reach as the leadoff man, Manuel Sanchez singled with one out to put a pair of runners on for Nick RodriguezNick Rodriguez delivered with a pull side base hit to put the Sharks ahead 2-1. 
  • Federico Zapata continued his dominant effort on the mound working seven consecutive scoreless innings before handing the ball over to Christopher Perez for the ninth inning. 
  • Christopher Perez worked a scoreless ninth with a pair of strikeouts, as he picked up his first career save and gave the Sharks a 2-1 victory.

What's Next
