Academic Recognition
The Department of Athletics celebrates our student-athlete’s academic achievements through various avenues. Student-athlete academic recognitions includes, but are not limited to, the following:
Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society
Chi Alpha Sigma is the first and only nonprofit organization that was established to honor college student-athletes who have excelled in both the classroom and in athletic competition. Chi Alpha Sigma is an honor society that recognizes college student-athletes who receive a varsity letter in their sport, achieve junior academic standing or higher after their fifth full time semester, and earn a 3.40 or higher cumulative grade point average. We are proud to be a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma organization and recognize the elite contributions these student-athletes are making in the classroom.
Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Luncheon
The Department of Athletics holds an annual student-athlete academic recognition luncheon at Grande Oaks to honor those student-athletes who excelled in the classroom and earned a 3.80 GPA in the previous Winter and/or Fall semesters. Administrators, coaches, staff members, faculty members, and campus partners are all invited to celebrate and be acknowledged for their pivotal role in helping the student-athletes achieve academic success.
Scholar-Athlete Display Board
Every semester, the Department of Athletics displays the names of all Shark Scholar-Athletes with a previous 3.25 semester GPA on the wall just outside the Academic Center. The Shark Scholar-Athletes with a previous 3.80 semester GPA are displayed separately under the Athletic Director’s Board.
Scholar-Athlete Recognition Game
Every semester, the Department of Athletics chooses an athletic competition to recognize and honor all Shark Scholar-Athletes with a previous 3.25 semester GPA. At halftime, student-athletes are introduced by team as they walk out to be congratulated by our Athletic Director, our Associate Athletic Director, and our Faculty Athletics Representative.
Student-Athlete Graduation Sash Reception
The Department of Athletics holds an annual sash reception to celebrate the successes of all graduating NSU student-athletes. At the reception, student-athletes are presented with stoles to proudly wear on the day of commencement.
Male and Female Scholar-Athlete Award
The Male and Female Scholar-Athlete is the most prestigious academic award given by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics upon completion of eligibility. Each year the Athletic Academic Services staff selects a male and female scholar-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA and presents the award at the end of the year awards show. In order for a student-athlete to be considered for this award, he/she must have attended NSU for at least four semesters.
