FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Alex Gynes (Sr., Nowra, Australia) of the Nova Southeastern men’s basketball team received All-Sunshine State Conference Second-Team honors, as announced by the conference office Thursday.
“Al was a joy to coach and considering all the health issues he's had over the past three seasons his success is remarkable,” said head coach Gary Tuell. “He's a wonderful offensive player who continues to improve and should have a nice career ahead of him in professional basketball in his homeland of Australia. Al not only is a leader and a good player, but he's also an outstanding representative of all the things a university, an athletic program and a team should want in a student-athlete. We're going to miss him but we look forward to following his future successes both on and off the courts."
Gynes led the Sharks in his final season by posting team-highs with 18 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game. Gynes shot 49 percent (151-311) from the floor and reached the foul line at a high rate while shooting 75 percent (146-196) there. He also ranked second on the team with both 50 assists and 28 steals.
The Shark forward scored a career-high 30 points in games against Valdosta State and Barry, both of which were on the road. Gynes was one of two players in the conference to average at least 18 points and eight rebounds a game.
Gynes finishes his career with 266 made free throws, the most of any Shark in the NCAA era and third all-time. He also ranks seventh in field goals made (293) and ninth in rebounds (418).
