FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The #NSU50 "Top Moments in NSU Athletics History" continues with the fifth moment on the list: Nova joins the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
August, 1985
The Sharks would begin competing in the NAIA in the fall of 1985. At the time, Nova's undergraduate population sat at 222 students. Like the undergraduate program, the athletic department had fully developed and was ready to take off.
Volleyball would be the first major success story in the program's NAIA era. In its first season competing in the organization, the Knights went 9-4 and won the District 25 Championship. One year later, Dag Cohen would become the athletic program's first All-American in men's soccer.
The Knights competed in the NAIA from 1985 until 2002 and hold a rich history from that time. They would go on to win 26 conference championships before moving to the NCAA.
