Cates earned the distinction of NSUSharks.com Athlete of the Week for two individual wins, which were also NCAA B-qualifying times in the Sharks’ 132-64 victory over Rollins. Cates posted a NCAA B-qualifying time of 4:41.96 to place first in the 500-yard freestyle. His mark in the 500-free was the fourth fastest in the SSC this season. He also took gold in the 200-free, registering the third-fastest time in the league with a time of 1:43.64.
