Aly Hassan (Fr., Weston, Fla.) registered his first career hat trick in a span of 11 minutes and 11 seconds, bringing back Nova Southeastern from a 3-0 deficit but it was not enough as the Sharks (9-3-1, 3-3-1 SSC) lost to the Rollins College Tars (9-4-1, 3-1-1) by a score of 5-4 in double overtime.
In the 24th minute, the Sharks had a chance to take a 1-0 lead but Tars goalkeeper Chris Cummings dove to his left and made a save on a Romain Onteniente (So., Nice, France) penalty kick to keep the game scoreless.
At halftime, NSU held a 6-4 shot advantage over Rollins and had the edge in corner kicks, 5-2. The 0-0 score belied the fate of the second half.
Rollins broke through in the 50th minute as Bradley Welch put one past Sharks' 'keeper Jarod Rennick (Sr., Allen, Texas) getting a friendly bounce that caught the goalie off guard and rolled off his arm and inside the back post.
One minute and 13 seconds later, the Tars made it 2-0 when Jon Gruenewald took a ball at the top of the 18 and picked the top left corner.
In the 60th minute, Dennis Chin appeared to put the nail in the coffin, giving the Tars a 3-0 lead.
In the 63rd minute, Hassan picked up a yellow card but seemed to use that as inspiration, scoring two goals in a span of two minutes, making it a brand-new game at 3-2.
In the 75th minute, Hassan cemented his goal scoring opus with his third goal of the game, taking a ball down to the top of the 18 and slotting it past Cummings, tying the game at three goals apiece. When the dust settled, Hassan scored three goals in 11 minutes and 11 seconds.
In the 86th minute, NSU took a 4-3 lead when defender Tim Taylor (Fr., Farmington Hills, Mich.) scored his first career goal, heading in a Juan Gonzalez (Fr., Oakland Park, Fla.) corner kick.
Moments after the goal, Hassan picked up a second yellow card and was sent off, giving Rollins the one-man advantage.
In the 87th minute, Rollins knotted the score again after a header by Dean Powells from the top of the 18 following a cross from Jacob Deloach.
In double overtime, Powells scored again, following a mad scramble inside the six-yard box to end the game at 5-4.
For the game, the Sharks outshot Rollins 18-13.
Cummings made 10 saves for the Tars while Rennick and Juan Vizcarrando (Fr., Weston, Fla.), who substituted for Rennick after Hassan's first goal, combined to make five saves.
NSU will return to action on Wednesday, October 17 as they will host the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish at 7pm at the NSU Soccer Complex.
