NSU Volleyball Sweeps Valdosta St. 3-0

Sharks Finish Play 2-1 In The Florida/Georgia Classic

Saint Leo, Fla. (October 13, 2007) - Nova Southeastern University volleyball defeated Valdosta State three games to none by the scores of 30-22, 30-28 and 30-26 in play on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Sharks' record to 19-7 overall while Valdosta State falls to 9-17.

NSU hit .304 in game one to win 30-22. The Sharks held Valdosta St. to a .128 attack percentage. Outside hitter Christina Chubb (Jr., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) led the charge with five kills and two aces in the opening game. Ruthie King and Steph Kirrstetter led the Blazers with four kills each.

The Sharks struggled in game two but found a way to capture victory, winning 30-28. NSU was held to a -.024 attack percentage while Valdosta St. hit .026. Outside hitter Andrea Irarrazabal (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and middle blocker Melinda Gorman (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) each had three kills for NSU. Kirrstetter had a match high six kills for the Blazers.

Nova Southeastern had a match high 20 kills and .368 attack percentage in game three, led by Gorman with six kills and no errors in eight attempts and opposite Aley Tallman (So., Wichita, Kan.) with five kills and no errors in seven attempts. Chubb also posted five kills in the final game for NSU. King led Valdosta St. with four kills.

For the match NSU out-hit Valdosta St. .216 to .136. The Sharks recorded 12 more kills, 10 more assists and six more aces.

Gorman tallied a team high 13 kills with only one error in 23 attempts to hit .522 in the match for NSU. Chubb followed with 11 kills and Tallman finished with nine. Setters Valia Petrova (Jr., Sofia, Bulgaria) and Jenny Fitch (Sr., Batavia, Ill.) had 25 and 12 assists, respectively. Middle Emily Carle (Jr., Missouri City, Tex.) set a new season high with four aces.

NSU returns home to host rival Barry University in a Sunshine State Conference match on Tuesday, October 16th at 7 pm in the University Center.
