NSU Volleyball Back On Winning Track With 3-2 Victory Over Palm Beach Atlantic

Sharks Led By Melinda Gorman and Emily Carle With 20 and 19 Kills, Respectively

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (October 9, 2007) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team turned back Palm Beach Atlantic University 3-2 in a non-conference match by the scores of 30-24, 30-26, 28-30, 21-30 and 15-8. The win improves the Sharks record to 17-6 on the season while PBA falls to 12-12.

NSU came out firing on all cylinders in game one, out-hitting the Sailfish .278 to .125 and slamming home ten more kills to win 30-24. In a game in which NSU never trailed, middle Emily Carle (Jr., Missouri City, Tex.) and opposite Aley Tallman (So., Wichita, Kan.) led with six kills apiece. Middle Melinda Gorman (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) followed with five kills while setter Valia Petrova (Jr., Sofia, Bulgaria) distributed 15 assists.

The Sharks continued to play well in the second game, winning 30-26. NSU hit .341 with 18 kills and only four errors in 41 attempts. PBA was limited to a .192 percentage. Carle led NSU again in game two, posting six kills and a .545 attack percentage. Fellow middle Gorman was also strong, recording four kills and no errors. Libero Kathleen Yony (Fr., Miami, Fla.) tallied six digs in the game for the Sharks.

Palm Beach Atlantic held back a furious NSU rally to win game three, 30-28. For the first time in the match the Sharks were out-hit, with PBA posting a .111 percentage while limiting NSU to .093. The Sharks were harmed by 13 attack errors, but stayed alive with five kills by Tallman and four apiece by Gorman and Carle. Defensive specialist Alison Kalish (So., Miami, Fla.) had a game high seven digs for NSU.

The Sailfish continued to fight in game four, downing the Sharks 30-21. PBA out-hit NSU .250 to .200 and recorded nine more kills in the game. Outside hitter Jenerra McGruder (So., Euless, Tex.) had five kills for NSU while PBA was led by Brittany Erickson and Bia Santos with six kills apiece.

Nova Southeastern came alive in game five, hitting at a match high .381 clip while limiting Palm Beach Atlantic to a -.176 percentage. PBA did not record a kill in the deciding game, while NSU received four kills from both Carle and Gorman to win. Yony contributed with five digs in the final game.

NSU out-hit PBA .236 to .147 for the match while tallying 20 more kills, 21 more assists, and 25 more digs. The Sharks scored 14 more total points than PBA in the match.

Santos led all PBA players with 15 kills while Erickson had 14.

Gorman led all players with 20 kills while hitting .441 and blocking four balls. Carle followed with 19 kills and a .457 attack percentage while Tallman also posted in double figures with 15 kills and 13 digs. Petrova hit a match high .857 while tallying 50 assists to go along with her 18 digs. McGruder contributed with 11 kills and nine digs. Yony finished with a career high 22 digs while Kalish had 11 in the Sharks victory.

Nova Southeastern University will hit the road for their next three matches, playing West Georgia at noon on Friday, October 12th at St. Petersburg, Fla. and Saint Leo at 7 pm on Friday, October 12th at Saint Leo, Fla. NSU will also play Valdosta State on Saturday, October 13th at Saint Leo. The Sharks match vs. Saint Leo can be heard live on the NSU Athletics Audiocast Network.
