Winter Park, Fla. (November 2, 2007) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team snuck out of Warden Arena with a 3-2 victory over Rollins College in play on Friday evening. The Sharks found themselves trailing 12-8 in the deciding game five only to go on an 8-2 rally to win 16-14. NSU lost game one 26-30, won game two 30-23, won game three 30-20 and lost game four 26-30. The Sharks improve to 23-8 overall and 9-4 in Sunshine State Conference play. Rollins falls to 17-15, 4-8.
Rollins came out firing on all cylinders in game one to win 30-26. NSU fell behind 4-1 early but went on a 5-0 run to lead 6-4. Rollins then responded with a 10-3 run of their own to lead 14-9 and held on to win the game. The Tars hit .400 in the game while holding NSU to .154. Middle Melinda Gorman (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) led the Sharks with five kills.
Nova Southeastern came back to win game two 30-23. The Sharks fell beind Rollins 8-6 early before going on a 13-6 run to lead 19-14. NSU maintained the lead to come away with the victory. NSU hit .362 in the game while Rollins hit .130. Gorman once again led the Sharks with five kills. Setter Valia Petrova (Jr., Sofia, Bulgaria) distributed 15 assists.
NSU didn't trail Rollins in game three and gradually added to their lead to win 30-20. The Sharks hit a match high .412 while Rollins hit a match low .083. Opposite Aley Tallman (So., Wichita, Kan.) led NSU with a game high six kills in eight attempts.
A series of runs dictated the tempo in game four, with Rollins coming away with the 30-26 victory. NSU went on a 4-0 run to lead 5-3 before Rollins went on a 9-2 run to lead by five points at 12-7. The Sharks tried to make things interesting with a 5-1 run to close within one at 13-12, only to have Rollins go on a late 4-0 run to win the game. NSU hit .294 in the game while Rollins hit .326. Middles Emily Carle (Jr., Missouri City, Tex.) and Gorman led NSU with five kills apiece.
The Sharks dug themselves a hole in game five, trailing 12-8, but finished the match on a 8-2 run to win 16-14. NSU overcame five early errors to hit .185 while Rollins hit .250. Gorman once again led the Sharks with three kills.
For the match, NSU out-hit Rollins .288 to .235. The Sharks had 17 more kills, 12 more assists, one more ace, three more digs, three more blocks and 21 more total points than the Tars.
Petrova recorded her second triple-double off the season, posting 10 kills, a career high 62 assists, and 14 digs. She hit .600 in the match, with only one error in 15 attempts.
Gorman had a match high 19 kills and a .412 attack percentage to go along with two aces, three digs and three blocks. Tallman posted 16 kills and a .282 attack percentage with a team high 18 digs. Outside Christina Chubb (Jr., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) tallied 16 kills and Carle collected 15 for NSU. Defensive specialist Alison Kalish (So., Miami, Fla.) contributed with 16 digs.
Lorena Orlandini and Nichols led Rollins with 19 kill each.
