Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (September 28, 2007) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team swept visiting Rollins College 3-0 by the scores of 30-28, 30-26, and 30-22 in play at home in the University Center on Friday evening. The win, NSU's tenth consecutive, brings the Sharks' record to 15-4 (5-0 SSC) while Rollins falls to 11-7 (2-2 SSC).
NSU out-hit Rollins .266 to .125 in the match and recorded 20 more kills than the Panthers. The Sharks also had two more blocks, two more aces, and 11 more assists in the match.
The Sharks came from behind to win game one 30-28. Nine service errors held the Sharks back, but a .400 attack percentage allowed NSU to rally and win the opening game. Outside hitter Paola Ruiz (Fr., Rio Piedras, P.R.) and opposite Aley Tallman (So., Wichita, Kan.) each had four kills to lead the Sharks' attack.
NSU built a large lead and held on to win game two 30-26. The Sharks once again out-hit the Tars .196 to .056 and recorded four blocks in the game. Middle Emily Carle (Jr., Missouri City, Tex.) and outside Christina Chubb (Jr., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) led NSU with four kills apiece.
Nova Southeastern once again built a large lead in game three and put Rollins away easily to win, 30-22. The Sharks out-hit Rollins for the third consecutive game, this time .256 to .114. Gorman and Ruiz had a game high four kills for NSU.
Gorman led the NSU attack with 10 kills and a .412 hitting percentage. Four other NSU players followed with nine kills, Carle, Chubb, Ruiz and Tallman. Setter Valia Petrova (Jr., Sofia, Bulgaria) contributed with a match high 38 assists. Ruiz and Chubb tied for the team lead with 11 digs. Gorman also led the Sharks with four blocks.
The Sharks have now won a program record 10 consecutive games, winning the deciding game five vs. Lynn University before sweeping Barry University, Florida Tech and now Rollins College. The win also marks the most wins in program history inside the Sunshine State Conference and continues the best start in program history since joining NCAA Division II in 2002.
NSU remains home to face #9 Florida Southern at 4pm on Saturday, September 29th in the University Center Arena.
