NSU Volleyball Sweeps Flagler 3-0

Sharks Set 4th Highest Attack Percentage In History Of The Program

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (September 7, 2007) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball program swept visiting Flagler College 3-0 in action on Friday evening in the University Center by the scores of 30-24, 30-25, and 30-13. The win brings the Sharks' record to 6-4 on the season while Flagler falls to 6-5.

The Sharks controlled play in game one, out-hitting the Saints .310 to .069. Outside hitter Paola Ruiz (Fr., Rio Piedras, P.R.) led the attack with six kills in seven attempts. Setter Valia Petrova (Jr., Sofia, Bulgaria) had 11 assists in the opening game.

NSU continued their dominance in the second game, out-hitting Flagler .244 to .029. The Sharks recorded 10 more kills, nine more assists, and two more aces than the Saints in the game. Middle blocker Melinda Gorman (Jr., Sarasota, Fla.) led the Sharks with seven kills in the game while Petrova had 13 more assists.

Nova Southeastern had a record setting game three, holding Flagler to only 13 points in the win. The Sharks recorded 14 kills and no errors in 20 attempts, establishing a .700 attack percentage. Ruiz and Gorman were each four for four in attack attempts in the final game.

For the match NSU out-hit Flagler .362 to .034. The .362 attack percentage lands fourth all-time in the NSU record books for attack percentage in a single match. The Sharks out-set the Saints 43 to 24, had nine more service aces, 12 more digs and four more total blocks in the match.

Gorman once again paced the Sharks' attack, posting 13 kills and a .588 attack percentage. Closely behind Gorman was Ruiz, who had 12 kills and nine digs. Petrova had a match high 35 assists while outside hitter Aley Tallman (So., Wichita, K.S) tied Ruiz with a match high nine digs.

The Sharks continue play on Wednesday, September 12th, hosting their first Sunshine State Conference match vs. the Florida Tech Panthers.
