Carle Carries NSU Volleyball To Five Set Victory Over Palm Beach Atlantic

Senior Middle Blocker Emily Carle Posts 15 Kills, 8 Blocks In Non-Conference Win

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 10, 2008) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team defeated Palm Beach Atlantic University 3-2 by the scores of 25-22, 21-25, 22-25, 25-18 and 5-7 in action on Friday evening. The win brings the Sharks season record to 14-5 while PBA falls to 8-10.

The Sharks controlled the tempo of play in the first set en route to a 25-22 win. Senior middle blocker Emily Carle (Missouri City, Tex.) and outside hitter Christina Chubb (Sr., Oakland Park, Fla.) each had four kills with no errors for NSU as the Sharks out-hit PBA .175 to .077. Sophomore libero Kathleen Yony (Miami, Fla.) had 10 digs in the set.

NSU looked like it would cruise to an easy victory in the second set, leading 17-6, before the Sailfish finished the set on a 19-4 run to win 25-21. The Sharks helped PBA's cause by handing them 19 points, 11 on attack errors, three on service errors, three on reception errors and one on a ball handling error and a blocking error. Carle and Jenerra McGruder (Jr., Euless, Tex.) had three kills for NSU in the set.

Palm Beach Atlantic carried the momentum from the second set over to the third set, winning 25-22. PBA hit a match high .289 in the set, led by Brittany Erickson with seven kills. McGruder had a team high four kills for NSU.

The Sharks rebounded to win the fourth set, hitting .407 as a team to win 25-18. Middle Molly Sigerich (Fr., Downers Grove, Ill.) had a team high four kills in the set, followed by Melinda Gorman (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) with three. NSU held PBA to a .065 attack percentage.

Behind Carle, the Sharks ran away with the fifth and deciding set, winning 15-7. Carle posted three kills with no errors, a dig and a block in the set. Yony tallied six digs.

For the match, NSU out-hit PBA .224 to .109. The Sharks had 27 more kills, 24 more assists, two more aces, 11 more digs and three more blocks than the Sailfish.

Carle recorded a match high 15 kills with only two errors in 25 attempts for a .520 attack percentage. She also had four assists, three digs and eight blocks in the match to lead NSU.

AVCA Division II National Player of the Week Valia Petrova (Sr., Sofia, Bulgaria) distributed 48 assists, had six kills, ten digs and five blocks.

Chubb, McGruder and Sigerich and posted double figures in kills, with 11, 11 and 10, respectively.

On the defensive side, Yony tallied 25 digs while defensive specialist Alison Kalish (Jr., Miami, Fla.) had 18.

The Sharks return home to host Rollins College at 4 pm on Saturday, October 11th inside the University Center Arena.
