NSU Volleyball Bends But Doesn't Break In Five Set Victory Over Embry-Riddle

Sharks Hang On For 15-13 Victory In Game Deciding Fifth Set

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 25, 2008) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team hung on for a three to two sets victory over Embry-Riddle in action at the ISI Center on Saturday afternoon to improve to 18-6 on the season. The 25-9, 17-25, 22-25, 25-16, 15-13 Sharks victory handed Embry-Riddle their second loss on the season to 21 victories.

The Sharks came out hungry in the first set, easily dispatching the Eagles 25-9. The win in the set marked the largest margin of victory in a set for NSU all season. Middles Molly Sigerich (Fr., Downers Grove, Ill.) and Emily Carle (Sr., Missouri City, Tex.) led the Sharks with five and four kills, respectively. NSU hit.448 as a team while Embry-Riddle was held to a -.103 attack percentage.

The Eagles came back to win the second set, as NSU was held to .098 hitting percentage. The Eagles hit a match high .344 in the set. Sigerich and Carle once again led NSU with five and four more kills.

The struggles continued for NSU in the third set, as once again Embry-Riddle out-hit the Sharks. NSU hit .167 as a team while the Eagles had a .235 percentage. Outside hitter Melinda Gorman (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) had a set high four kills for NSU while Paola Ruiz (So., Rio Piedras, P.R.) had three kills and five digs.

Behind Gorman and Christina Chubb (Sr., Oakland Park, Fla.), the Sharks ran away with a 25-16 victory in the fourth set. Setter Valia Petrova (Sr., Sofia, Bulgaria) distributed 13 assists as the Sharks hit .268 as a team. Libero Kathleen Yony (So., Miami, Fla.) tallied seven digs.

The Sharks trailed early in the match deciding fifth set, but rallied to win 15-13. Carle willed the Sharks to victory, accounting for four kills, an ace and a block. Chubb and Sigerich each added two kills as the Sharks hit .148.

For the match, NSU hit .218 as a team while limiting Embry-Riddle to a .150 attack percentage. NSU had 24 more kills, 20 more assists, seven more aces and two more blocks than the Eagles.

NSU was led by Carle with 18 kills, a .469 attack percentage, three aces, three digs and a block. Sigerich followed with 14 kills and six blocks. Petrova tallied 52 assists, four kills and eight digs. Gorman accounted for 12 kills. Yony set a match high with 25 digs.

NSU returns to play on Tuesday, October 28th at 7 pm vs. Florida Tech in Melbourne, Fla.
