FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Oct. 3, 2008) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team fell three sets to one in a heated Sunshine State Conference match-up inside the University Center Arena on Friday evening. The loss drops the Sharks to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in SSC play while the No. 6 nationally ranked Moccasins improve to 13-4, 3-1 SSC.
After falling behind early in the first set, NSU battled back to take the lead behind middle blocker Emily Carle's (Sr., Missouri City, Tex.) four kills. Outside hitter Christina Chubb (Sr., Oakland Park, Fla.) provided a spark off the bench, contributing with three kills and no errors in six attempts. Defensive specialist Alison Kalish (Jr., Miami, Fla.) contributed with two aces and two digs.
Florida Southern turned the tables on NSU in the second set, coming back from an early deficit to win 25-22. While the Sharks out-hit FSC .281 to .182 in the set, the Mocs took advantage of 11 NSU errors to come away with the victory. Outside hitter Melinda Gorman (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) had a match high four kills for NSU in the set.
In a back and forth affair that saw five ties in the closing points, Florida Southern held off two NSU set points to win 28-26. Chubb once again led NSU, posting six kills in nine attempts. Setter Valia Petrova (Sr., Sofia, Bulgaria) distributed 13 assists. Outside hitter Jenerra McGruder (Jr., Euless, Tex.) had eight digs.
Despite four kills from Paola Ruiz (So., Miami, Fla.), Florida Southern took the fourth and final set by a 25-18 score. The Mocs hit a match high .370 in the set while limiting NSU to .182.
For the match, Florida Southern out-hit NSU .289 to .230. FSC was led by Danielle Durham and Anna Greenwood with 16 kills apiece. Setter Elise Burke had a match high 54 assists while libero Courtney Johnson had 22 digs.
NSU was led by Chubb with 13 kills and a .455 attack percentage. Carle and Gorman followed with 10 kills apiece while Petrova tallied 43 assists. McGruder had 13 digs and Carle had five blocks to lead the Sharks.
NSU will remain at home to host Saint Leo University in another SSC contest on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 4 pm inside the University Center Arena.
