NSU Volleyball Downed 3-1 At #13 Florida Southern In SSC Clash

LAKELAND, Fla. (Nov. 7, 2008) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team was defeated in four sets by No. 13 nationally ranked Florida Southern College by the scores of 25-15, 19-25, 17-25, and 22-25 in Sunshine State Conference action on Friday night. The loss drops the Sharks to 20-9 overall and 8-5 in SSC play while Florida Southern improves to 23-7, 10-3 SSC.

The Sharks came out hungry in the opening set, drawing blood en route to an 11-0 early lead. NSU continued to extend their lead, resulting in the 25-15 final score. Nova Southeastern hit a match high .312 in the set, led by Emily Carle (Sr., Missouri City, Tex.) and Christina Chubb (Sr., Oakland Park, Fla.) with four kills apiece. Libero Kathleen Yony (So., Miami, Fla.) added four digs as the Sharks pressured FSC to a -.111 attack percentage.

The Moccasins rebounded to win the second set, 25-19. Florida Southern hit a match high .258 in the set, led by Danielle Durhams five kills. Despite four kills from Carle, the Sharks hit .000 in the set.

The third set remained close, with four ties and two lead changes, until the Mocs went on a late run to win 25-17. NSU was held to a .000 hitting percentage again while Florida Southern hit .216. Melinda Gorman (Sr., Sarasota, Fla.) had a set high two kills for NSU, which was held to just six kills in the set. Yony added four more digs.

Nova Southeastern rallied late in the fourth set, going on a 7-0 run to lead 21-19, but ran out of gas in the 25-22 loss. Middle Molly Sigerich (Fr., Downers Grove, Ill.) led NSU with three kills as the Sharks hit .026 as a team. Florida Southern .103 attack percentage was carried by Maggie Drumm, who had five kills in the set.

For the match, FSC out-hit NSU .112 to .081. The Moccasins had three players with double figure kill totals while NSU was led by Carle with 10. Carle was followed by Gorman with six kills. Sigerich and Chubb added five, apiece. The Sharks out-blocked Florida Southern 13 to seven. Setter Valia Petrova (Sr., Sofia, Bulgaria) had four kills, 23 assists and five digs in the match. Yony had a team high 13 digs while Sigerich led all players with six blocks.

NSU remains on the road, traveling to play Saint Leo University in a Sunshine State Conference match at 4pm on Saturday, November 8th.
