Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (September 14, 2008) - The Nova Southeastern University women's soccer extended it unbeaten streak to five games against rival Lynn University but ended up with a 1-1 draw with the Fighting Knights. NSU moves to 3-0-2 on the season while Lynn stands now stands at 4-1-1 overall.
In front of a packed crowd, Lynn quickly went up 1-0. Collecting an errant pass, the Fighting Knights Melissa Ortiz switched sides of the field, finding Alyssa Rijavec on the far left wing, who immediately sent an aerial pass to Ortiz on a diagonal run. Ortiz beat one defender, then beat Sharks goal keeper Megan Kim (Jr., Valrico, Fla.) before tapping in her shot for the score.
A breakdown within the back four opened up the field for Sharks forward Shurell Burton (Sr., Palm Bay, Fla.) who took advantage to knot the score at 1-1 25 minutes into the match. Burton chipped her shot over Lynns diving goalie to even the match up.
The Sharks best opportunity to break the match open came in double overtime when Lynn goalie Natalie Feller raced off her line and made a sliding tackle on Burton. Immediately issued a card, Feller prevented a sure fire open net chance.
Nova Southeastern out-shot LU 19-12 with the Knights taking five corners to the Sharks seven. This marks the fourth consecutive game against Lynn that has been decided by a goal or less, with NSU winning the previous three meetings.
