FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Sept. 24, 2008) - With the minutes ticking down beneath the lights of the NSU Soccer Complex Wednesday night, neither the Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team or the Barry University women's soccer team were able to break through for a game winning goal. The Sharks' record moves to 4-0-3 (0-0-2 SSC) on the season while the Buccaneers move to 5-3-1 (1-1-1 SSC).
With NSU clinging to a 1-0 lead over conference rival Barry University, the Buccaneers made their move. Bucs sophomore Emily Bourgoine found herself all alone at the top of the goalie box late in the second half, and was able to cash in on the opportunity, knotting the match in the 86th minute.
NSU took the lead in the 69th minute on brilliant ball handling display between defenders by the Shark's Stephanie Quinones (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.). The two-time All-American threaded a pass to sophomore Alexis Hernandez (Weston, Fla.), who delivered with a bullet inside the upper right corner of the net to give NSU the 1-0 lead.
After regulation was over, the two teams headed to overtime where both teams found it tough to score. NSU's goalkeeper, Megan Kim (Jr., Valrico, Fla.) and Barry's net defender Sami Cromartie both held their ground, denying several attempts from the opposition trying to claim victory.
Nova Southeastern out-shot Barry 15-11, but Barry was able to put one more shot on goal (7-6). NSU held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Kim was able to tally six saves for the Sharks, including four in the first overtime period. Hernandez paced NSU with four shots.
The Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team will play again Saturday September 27th at 6:00 p.m. as they play host to Thomas University as part of a NSU soccer doubleheader
