Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Oct. 13, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team tied No. 9 Rollins 2-2 in a key Sunshine State Conference match on Tuesday evening at the NSU Soccer Complex. With the tie, NSU moves to 6-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the SSC. Rollins is now 9-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the SSC.
"Rollins is a talented and well-coached team," said head coach Mike Goodrich. "It was a 110 minute battle. The girls worked hard on both teams. A draw is a fair result. We're now going to take some time off and get ready to go to Melbourne to play No. 14 Florida Tech."
NSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. As Fiorella Booth's (Jr., Miami, Fla.) shot was blocked by the Tar defense, Elisa Cabot (Fr., Melbourne, Fla.) collected the rebound and tucked the ball just inside the left post.
However, a costly NSU foul inside the box in the 14th minute allowed for Rollins to even the game at 1-1 as Leah Hirsch converted on the penalty kick.
The game did not remain tied for long as Aubrey Fondy (Fr., Arvada, Colo.) put the Sharks up 2-1 in the 16th minute. Deirdre Long (Fr., Boca Raton, Fla.) found Fondy on the right side. Fondy's shot went in just under the crossbar to give the Sharks the one-goal lead, which they ultimately held heading into halftime.
The Tars scored the equalizer in the 59th minute as a shot from Rachel Jackubowski went through traffic in the six-yard box and into the goal.
Both teams had several chances throughout the remainder of the game to break tie. However, both NSU and Rollins had several key defensive stops.
Rollins outshot the Sharks 21-7 and held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Sarah Glass (R-Jr., Melbourne, Fla.) had a total of seven stops, including five in the second half. Michelle Dillingham made three saves for the Tars.
The Sharks will face their second-straight nationally-ranked team as NSU travels to No. 14 Florida Tech on Saturday. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
