Multiple Sharks Shine In SSC Sweep Over Barry

Middle Blocker Carly Perschnick Was Perfect With 13 Kills And No Errors In Win

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Oct. 27, 2009) - Behind the right arm of freshman middle blocker Carly Perschnick the Nova Southeastern University volleyball team swept Barry three sets to none in Sunshine State Conference action on Tuesday evening inside a packed Don Taft University Center on Think Pink Dig for a Cure Night. The Sharks improve to 15-9 on the season and 6-5 in SSC play while Barry falls to 11-9, 2-7 in SSC play.

Perschnick (Dwight, Ill.) registered 13 kills with no errors on 21 attempts to hit a career high .619 in the match for the Sharks. Junior outside hitter Taylor Pohlman (Olathe, Kan.) also had 13 kills while hitting .312. Senior outside hitter Jenerra McGruder (Euless, Tex.) had 11 kills and hit .296 while sophomore outside hitter Anabely Escarpita (Boca Raton, Fla.) hit .368 with eight kills. Senior All-America setter Valia Petrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) totaled 45 assists on the night. Junior libero Kathleen Yony (Miami, Fla.) had a match high 20 digs.

The Sharks came out firing on all cylinders in the first set, defeating the Buccaneers 25-21 while hitting a match high .410 in the set. Escarpita led the attack with six kills in eight attacks for a .750 hitting percentage. Perschnick had five kills in seven attempts. Petrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) distributed 18 assists.

NSU stepped up the defensive intensity in the second set, limiting Barry to a .000 hitting percentage in the 25-15 victory. The Sharks hit .22 as a team, led by Perschnick with four kills in eight attempts. Yony contributed with six digs in the set.

Nova Southeastern carried their momentum over into the third set to win 25-17. Pohlman registered a set high nine kills in the set while hitting .571. McGruder had six kills and Perschnick added four kills in six attempts. Petrova collected 18 more assists. The Sharks hit .349 as a team in the set.

For the match, NSU out-hit Barry .331 to .191. The Sharks had 16 more kills, 18 more assists, four more aces, 12 more digs and one more block than the Buccaneers.

The Sharks will host Florida Tech in a SSC match on Friday, November 6th at 7 p.m. inside the Don Taft University Center.
