Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Nov. 7, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team defeated Rollins College three sets to one in Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The win, NSU's fourth consecutive at home, improves their record to 17-9 on the season, including 8-5 in SSC play. Rollins falls to 14-18 and 2-12 in SSC play.
NSU came out and had their highest hitting percentage in the first set en route to the 25-18 victory. Hitting .353 as a team, the Sharks were led by junior outside hitter Lucia Cizmarova (Bratislava, Slovak Republic) with five kills and no errors in eight attempts.
The Sharks stayed hot in the second set, winning 25-19. NSU hit .333 as a team, led by senior outside hitter Jenerra McGruder (Euless, Tex.) with five kills. Cizmarova and freshman middle blocker Carly Perschnick (Dwight, Ill.) had four kills apiece. Junior libero Kathleen Yony (Miami, Fla.) added nine digs in the set.
Rollins rebounded to win the third set 25-22. Even though the Sharks out-hit the Tars .257 to .190, Rollins had two more kills and two more aces to make up the scoring. Perschnick had a team high four kills for NSU.
Nova Southeastern ran away with the fourth set, winning 25-15. Junior outside hitter Taylor Pohlman (Olathe, Kan.) registered four kills and no errors on nine attempts for a .444 hitting percentage. Freshman middle blocker Rachel Woodson (Rogers, Ark.) contributed with two kills while freshman setter Kelly McMahon (Madison, Wis.) had two service receptions and a dig.
For the match, NSU out-hit Rollins .299 to .164. The Sharks had 14 more kills, 16 more assists, four more aces, and 13 more digs than the Tars.
Cizmarova totaled a team high 14 kills, followed by Perschnick with 13 and McGruder with 10. Senior All-America setter Valia Petrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) had five kills, 47 assists, 13 digs and two blocks.
Nikki Hartman and Mikayla Pierce tied for Rollins team lead with 13 kills apiece.
The Sharks remain at home, hosting SSC rival Lynn University at 7 pm on Tuesday, November 10th inside the Don Taft University Center.
