FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Aug. 29, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern men's soccer team (1-1-0) won its first game of the season Saturday night by defeating Georgia Southwestern (0-2-0) 4-1 at the NSU Soccer Complex.
"I'm pretty pleased with the result, but I'm disappointed with the ending," said head coach Giuseppe DePalo. "We let our foot off the gas. It's early and we'll get better, but our mentality needs to improve."
After a one and a half hour rain delay, the Sharks came out with passion and posted a 3-1 lead before halftime. NSU would score another goal in the second period and hold Georgia Southwestern to only two shots on goal.
Craig Heenighan (Jr., Widnes, England) started off the night by scoring NSU's first goal of the season. The Heenighan's goal came from 25 yards out in the 14th minute. Brad Randolph (Jr., Farmington Hills, Mich.) scored his team's second goal off of a rebound from Juan Gonzalez's (Jr., Oakland Park, Fla.) shot off the cross bar in the 30th minute.
In the 38th minute, Alvin Quaye (So., East Ham, England) hit a shot on goal that was saved by David Porley but bounced towards Heenighan. The midfielder seized the opportunity by scoring his second goal of the game from inside the 18 yard box.
The Hurricanes scored their first goal with a minute left in the first half, but the Sharks played lock-down defense for the remaining 46 minutes. Georgia Southwestern would only take three shots during the entire second half. David Wahlberg (Sr., Skanor, Sweden) scored the game's final goal off a pass from Heenighan in the 75th minute.
It was another physical night for the Sharks as eight cards were given out. The Hurricanes were given six of those, including a red card for Michael Moses in the 35th minute. Over the course of the game, the Sharks put on a fantastic display of offense and outshot the Hurricanes 24 to 9.
Nova Southeastern will now get set for a two game road trip starting at North Georgia this Friday, Sept. 4 at 6 pm.
