Daytona Beach, Fla. (Aug. 30, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team opened the 2009 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Embry-Riddle on Sunday afternoon at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Complex. It is the seventh time in the last eight years in which NSU has won its season-opener.
"We won, so that's an obvious positive," said head coach Mike Goodrich. "I saw today what I thought I was going to see. We made some adjustments at halftime. A win is a good start to the season; we'll see how it goes from here."
After a scoreless first half, NSU scored a pair of goals within the first eight minutes of the second half. Andrea Camere (So., Miami, Fla.) gave the Sharks the 1-0 lead in the 51st minute. Camere's initial shot was deflected by Embry-Riddle goalkeeper Dina Roper. Danielle Granholm (Fr., Broomfield, Colo.) collected the rebound and took a shot that was also stopped by Roper, but Camere received the rebound and shoot the ball into the back of the net.
Just two minutes later, Elizabeth Brauher (Sr., Hilo, Hawaii) put NSU up by two. Brauher got around two defenders and then chipped a shot into the top left corner of the goal.
NSU outshot the Eagles 14-9. Sarah Glass (R-Jr., Melbourne, Fla.) made five saves in the shutout. Roper had eight stops for Embry-Riddle.
The Sharks return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 8 when they open up Sunshine State Conference play at Barry. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
