Miami Shores, Fla. (Sept. 8, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern University women's soccer team opened Sunshine State Conference play with a 2-0 victory over rival Barry at Buccaneer Field on Tuesday night. With the win, NSU improves to 2-0-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in the SSC. Barry falls to 1-2-0 overall and 0-1-0- in the conference.
"It was a great result and we are happy with it," said head coach Mike Goodrich. "It was our first conference game of the season and for a majority of our team. Playing away and at Barry, there are many positives from the game. However, there are still some things that we need to work on just like everybody else."
NSU went up 1-0 in the 26th minute. Aubrey Fondy (Fr., Arvada, Colo.) dodged the Barry defense, but got fouled by Buccaneer goalkeeper Emily Brunschweiler inside the 18-yard box to set up a Shark penalty kick. Alexis Hernandez (Jr., Weston, Fla.) converted on the penalty kick, blasting a shot into the lower right corner.
The Sharks took a two-goal lead in the 36th minute as a Hernandez cross on the right side found the head of Kesiah Wattley (Jr., Centreville, Va.).
Defensively, Sarah Glass (R-Jr., Melbourne, Fla.) had yet another stellar performance in goal en route to recording her second-straight shutout of the season. Glass made a career-high 14 saves, including 10 in the second half.
"Sarah was steady in goal," said Goodrich. "She showed the leadership that we expect and did a good job."
The Buccaneers outshot the Sharks 21-12, but NSU held a 6-3 corner kick advantage.
NSU returns to action this weekend with a two-game road swing to Alabama. The Sharks open the trip on Friday at the University of Mobile. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. EST.
