VALDOSTA, Ga. –The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team (7-11) swept the West Georgia Wolves, 3-0, for its second straight win of the Wingate by Wyndham Crossover Classic Friday afternoon in the PE Complex.
Junior
Molly Sigerich (Downers Grove, Ill.) led the charge with a match high 13 kills and junior
Anabely Escarpita (Boca Raton, Fla.) also recorded double-digit kills with 11. Three Sharks finished with double-digit kills in
Kelly McMahon (So., Madison, Wis.),
Paola Ruiz (Sr., Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico) and
Paige Boivin (So., Plainfield, Ill.) with 13, 11 and 10, respectively. McMahon sets a new career high with 13 digs.
The Sharks battled hard to win set one, as they were down as much as four numerous times. Junior Sigerich slammed five kills in the opener. McMahon had a set high eight digs and sophomore setter
Jordan Pappas (Naperville, Ill.) recorded double-digit kills with 14.
With two players hitting .500 in the second set, NSU easily took the set 25-18. Both Sigerich and
Danielle Graham (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) had three kills while the Sharks also stepped up their defensive game adding four blocks in the frame.
With the Sharks down by one at 11-10, sophomore
Rachel Woodson (Rogers, Ark.) recorded back-to-back kills to lead the Sharks rally and retake the lead.
At 18-18, Sigerich broke the tie with a kill and then teamed with Escarpita to extend the Sharks lead by two. West Georgia's head coach called a timeout to break NSU's momentum.
Out of the break, another block by Sigerich, this time paired with Woodson, furthered the Sharks lead. Senior Ruiz put NSU at set point with back-to-back aces and a kill by Sigerich sealed the win, 25-18.
Although it took some extra points, the Sharks swept the Wolves winning the third frame, 30-28.
Despite being up most of the set, West Georgia fought back to even it up at 18-18 and even took the lead on the very next point. Freshman
Samantha High (Naples, Fla.) and Pappas set up a block to even the score at 20-20.
West Georgia was at set point 24-22 but a kill by Escarpita and a solo block by Sigerich tied it up at 24-24. That was Sigerich's fifth block of the match tying her for fourth on NSU's all-time career block list with Karla Ortiz (2003-06) with 225.
Down 28-27, Ruiz mustered two back-to-back kills to give the Sharks the lead and match point. A West Georgia attack error allowed the Sharks to get its second straight win at the Crossover Classic.
