ST. LEO, Fla. –
Aly Hassan (Sr., Weston, Fla.) scored his third game-winning goal of the season in the 89th minute of play to give the Nova Southeastern University men's soccer team (6-4-2, 2-4-0 SSC) their first victory on Saint Leo’s (8-4-0, 2-4-0 SSC) pitch in 11 years on Saturday night.
The Lions got off to a quick start scoring the lone goal of the first half when Jonathan Glenn received a through ball from the midfield and broke away taking a shot on goal. Keeper
Lyle Howe (So., Coral Springs, Fla.) was able to save the first shot, but right into the path of Glenn as he chipped it into the back right of the net to give the Lions an early 1-0 edge just four minutes into the game.
The first half saw the Sharks instigate more physical play with five yellow cards being handed out to the Sharks to St. Leo’s zero. The Lions showed more offense in the first 45 minutes having six shots on goal, while NSU had none.
Following halftime, the physical play ensued with three yellow cards being handed out in the first nine minutes.
The Lions continued there offense prowess having two more shots on goal than the Sharks. Finally, Hassan was able to equalize the game in the 73rd minute of play. He caught a through ball from midfield and took advantage of a hesitating Saint Leo keeper chipping over his outstretched arms for his sixth goal of the season.
Hassan's second goal came in the 89th minute. He received another through ball, this time on the right side, booted in the game-winning goal on the lower left side past a sliding Lions keeper for his second multiple goal game of the season.
Overall, the Lions led 9-3 in shots-on-goal, while also edging the Sharks 2-1 in corner kicks.
Keeper Howe smothered eight saves for the Sharks raising his season total to 55.
“We have told this team all year that you are as good as any other team in the conference,” Coach Giuseppe Depalo said after the game, “if we play with heart and passion we are a good team.”
The Sharks continue their three-game road trip traveling to Lakeland, Fla. to face conference foe Florida Southern on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 7 pm.
