WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women’s soccer team (5-3-1, 2-0-1 SSC) held the No. 4 Rollins Tars (5-3-1, 2-0-1 SSC) to a 2-2 draw at Barker Family Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur Field late Saturday night.
Despite the nationally ranked team surrendering two goals, the second most they have given up this season, the Tars could not get past the Sharks for its first tie of the 2010 season.
Despite the offensive attack that Rollins showed in the match up with 19 shots, 12 being on goal, the defensive stops that Nova’s keeper,
Chrissy Hy (Jr., Weston, Fla.), had was the highlight of the game. Hy produced a career high 10 stops.
“It’s not a stat that you want your keeper to have but she stood tall tonight,” said head coach Mike Goodrich.
Rollins struck first when Brenna McKee deflected a cross from Chelsea Brady into the low right side of the goal in the 23rd minute giving the Tars the early 1-0 lead.
The Sharks tied up the game with just two minutes left in the first half after a 35-yard bomb from
Alexandra Siciliano (Fr., New Hyde Park, N.Y.), flew past the out-reached arms of the Rollins’ keeper Michelle Dillingham for her second goal of the season.
Malin Broberg (Fr., Stockholm, Sweden) dished her third assist of the season with the equalizer.
The Tars showed more offensive prowess in the first half with a strong edge in shots on goal, 6-1, holding NSU to zero shots on goal for the first 43 minutes of the match. Hy tied a season high in saves in a first half with five, the other being in the season opening match against No. 2 West Florida on Sept. 3rd.
After being in a draw the first 72 minutes, the Sharks took the 2-1 lead in the 73rd minute after
Alexis Hernandez (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) kicked in her sixth goal of the season off an assist from
Raye Salkey (Fr., Palm Bay, Fla.).
“Raye had a great assist to Hernandez,” said Goodrich.
With the Sharks looking to hold off Rollins, the Tars equaled the score just six minutes later as Charlotte Murrel buried a ball in the left corner of the goal from 35 yards out to make it 2-2 in the 78th minute.
The first overtime period the Sharks controlled the pace of play with two shots to Rollins one, but to no prevail as the match extended into a second overtime period. Just 28 seconds in, Hernandez looked to end it but Dillingham made the crucial stop for the Tars.
With minutes remaining in the second overtime, freshman
Shelby Wright (Yuma, Ariz.) gave a valiant effort as her shot just went wide left at the 108:37 mark, for the only shot from either team in the final 10 minutes of the game.
The Sharks continue their conference road trip at University of Tampa on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m.
