Volleyball Swept By Barry On The Road, 3-0

Molly Sigerich Led Team With Nine Kills and Five Blocks

The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team (5-10, 2-5 SSC) loss its third straight conference match to the Barry Buccaneers in three straight sets, 25-19, 25-18, 25-18.

The Bucs (9-2, 6-1 SSC), who are receiving votes in the national AVCA poll, outhit the Sharks, .238 to .088 and won its 25th game between these two teams.

Junior Molly Sigerich (Downers Grove, Ill.) led the Sharks with nine kills in the loss. Defensively, the Sharks out blocked the Bucs, 7.0 to 6.0.

With the over from the Bucs in the opening play, Sigerich tapped it over for the first point of the match. She then followed with a tip out of reach of the Barry defense to take an early 2-0 lead. After a side out, Nova quickly got the ball back as Sigerich got a kill on the slide to the open floor.

The Buccaneers went on a 5-0 run to take a 6-3 lead. The Sharks were relentless as they fought back to even it up 6-6. Paola Ruiz (Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico) started the rally with a solo block, then the senior cut the lead within one with a kill of her own. The Sharks kill leader slammed down another kill to even it at six.

After a 5-0 run by Barry, head coach Steve Wilcosky called a timeout to kill the Buccaneers momentum. Although the Sharks came out of break with two straight points, Barry rallied back strong to take the first set.

Both teams hit under .200 in the first set with Barry edging the Sharks, .143 to .098.

Already down 1-0, the Sharks continued to fail as an offensive threat hitting only .040 in second frame.

At 18-13, Sigerich served an ace to cut the Bucs lead by four. Barry once against was relentless finishing the second set on a 7-3 run to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

In the third set, a great defensive hustle play Kathleen Yony (Sr., Miami Fla.) and Ruiz fired up the Sharks and in result ended with a block by Sigerich and Anabely Escarpita (Jr., Boca Raton, Fla.) to complete a 3-0 run for Nova.

Up in the third set 5-4, Rachel Woodson (So., Roger, Ark.) put up the sole block putting the Sharks up by two. Sigerich would follow with her own solo block in the set to extend Nova's lead 11-6.

At 13-8, the Bucs cut the Sharks lead to one as Wilcosky called a timeout in attempt to turn the momentum in Nova's favor. The Navy and Silver scored back-to-back points after the break.

Although the Sharks controlled the tempo in the third set, the Buccaneers went on a 4-0 to take its first lead in the frame at 18-17. Barry closed the match winning the third set, 25-18.

The Sharks will return home to square off against No. 5 Tampa in The Arena in the Don Taft University Center on Saturday at 4 p.m. Nova will look to snap a three-game losing skid.
