FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern athletic department, in conjunction with NSU Office of Career Development, hosted the program’s first ever student-athlete career workshop for underclassmen. Athletes from NSU’s volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis, rowing, men’s and women’s soccer participated in the event.
“It is my vision that this event is the beginning of many more to come, which will provide our student-athletes opportunities to learn and more importantly apply real life skills,” said NSU Athletic Director Michael Mominey. “This is a preparation exercise as much as anything else and I am excited to engage our student-athletes with potential employers in a real life situation. This concept is certainly a win-win for all involved.”
Held at the NSU Arena at the Don Taft University Center, the career workshop aimed towards helping freshman and sophomore student-athletes connect with local and national employers and develop their networking skills. Employers at the workshop included the Department of Homeland Security, Morgan Stanley, Autonation, and many more.
The workshop was a part of the NCAA Student-Athlete Affairs programs, which was formerly CHAMPS/Life Skills. Student-Athlete Affairs programs, resources and events are designed to promote the well-being and development of student-athletes and to provide on-going education and training to athletics professionals who identify and serve student-athlete needs.
The program plans to hold another event in the spring where they look forward to hosting the ten other NSU athletic teams. Dr. Tolchinsky, Manager of Student-Athlete Academic Services, acknowledged the commitment of the student-athletes and coaches for attending the event, saying it showed a “dedication to professional development.” She summed up the presentation by Career Development by saying, “College is a destination to get to a career. These skills make student-athletes highly marketable and valuable assets in today’s work place.”
