CLEARWATER, Fla. (Feb 19, 2010) - The No. 15 Nova Southeastern softball team went 1-1 in the opening games of the Eckerd College Triton Invitational. The Sharks (6-2) dropped their first game against No. 6 Valdosta State (3-0), 7-3 but took the second game against West Florida (4-2), 7-4.
"I'm very pleased with our ability to bounce back," said head coach Lesa Boneè. "In our two losses we've turned around and won the next game. We played two extremely good teams today and got a big win against a regional opponent."
Brittany Phillips (Jr., Seminole, Fla.) had a solid outing against the Blazers in which she went 1-for-3 with two RBI. She also had a highlight play in the fourth inning when she made a diving catch to end the inning. Rachel Talenfeld (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) went 2-for-3 in the opening game and finished the day 4-for-6.
Brittney Lamb (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) led the Sharks in their sixth win of the season by hitting 3-for-4 with one run. Patty Rivero (Sr., Miami, Fla.) hit her first home run of the year when she blasted a solo bomb over the left field fence Noemi Luciani (Sr., Miami, Fla.) also hit well in the leadoff spot with three hits and a game-high four assists.
After unleashing three runs in the first inning, the Sharks held the Blazers scoreless for the first four innings. Lexi Sarradet (Jr., Miami, Fla.) looked great during that stretch and only allowed one hit. The Blazers would tie the game up in the fifth inning off of a three run home run past left center field by Marti Littlefield.
The score was tied at three runs heading into the seventh inning. The Blazers had two outs on the board when they scored the go ahead run on a throwing error. They would go on to score three more runs that would go unanswered. Sarradet's record dropped to 2-2 on the season.
The Sharks bounced back from adversity well in their second win of the year over the West Florida Argonauts. The Sharks were consistent and drove in runs in four different innings. NSU racked up 15 hits and six different batters drove in runs, including Sarah Hart's (Jr., Newburgh, Ind.) first RBI as a Shark.
Dani Caron (Sr., Wellington, Fla.) had her fourth solid outing of the year. She only allowed three earned runs while striking out five batters. She's now 4-0 on the season.
The Sharks will continue the EC Triton Invitational tomorrow when they play Drury at 1:30 pm.
