CLEARWATER, Fla. (Feb 20, 2010) - The No. 15 Nova Southeastern softball team went 1-1 at the Eckerd Triton Invitational for the second day in a row Saturday. The Sharks (7-3) toppled the Drury Panthers (2-3), 3-1 but were upset by the Flagler Saints (6-3), 2-0.
"We didn't deserve to win the ball game with Flagler," said Heaad Coach Lesa Boneè. "We didn't play well enough to win. We were sluggish and we never got in our rhythm, but tomorrow's another day."
Jessica Hernandez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) had one of her best games of the season in the Sharks' win over Drury. With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Hernandez blasted a double to left center that drove in all of the Sharks' runs. She batted 2-for-3 in the game and finished the day 3-for-6.
Meanwhile, Lexi Sarradet (Jr., Miami, Fla.) held the opposition to just one run which was not earned. She pitched a complete game while striking out a season-high six batters. Four of those strike outs came in the final three innings. Sarradet improved her record to 3-2 on the year.
Against the Drury Panthers, the Sharks were scoreless and trailed 1-0 after Drury scored off a throwing error in the fifth inning. The offense woke up at that point when Sarah Hart (Jr., Newburgh, Ind.) hit a leadoff single followed by a successful bunt by Patty Rivero (Sr., Miami, Fla.).
The bases became full when Rachel Talenfeld (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) walked, setting up the game winning double from Hernandez. Drury would not reach second base for the remainder of the game.
The Sharks had a rough outing in their loss against Flagler. They totaled six hits, but no player had more than one. Dani Caron (Sr., Wellington, Fla.) pitched very well in her first loss of the season. She struck out two batters and only allowed three hits. She did not give up an earned run in the game but still dropped to 4-1 overall.
Although the Saints only had three hits over seven innings, they took advantage of the Sharks' mistakes and scored a run in the fourth and sixth inning. Flagler finished the day 2-0.
The Sharks will look to rebound tomorrow morning when they face off against Florida Tech at 9 am.
