Sharks Overpower Newberry 17-3

Nova Southeastern Compiles 16 Hits In Just 7 Innings

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Feb. 5, 2010)  The Nova Southeastern baseball team pounded out 17 runs and 16 hits in a rain-shortened 17-3 win over visiting Newberry College On Friday evening. The win improves the Sharks record to 1-1 on the season while evening Newberry's record at 1-1.

Newberry scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning on third baseman Chris Love's RBI double down the left field line. The Sharks answered in the bottom of the third inning, scoring twice to take the lead. Senior second baseman Eric McCans (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and senior outfielder Brayan Valencia (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) each had RBI hits in the inning for Nova Southeastern.

The visitors from Newberry, S.C. re-took the lead in the top of the fifth inning, scoring twice on a hit by pitch, an error and a wild pitch.

The Sharks took control of the game in the bottom half of the inning, scoring seven times on seven hits. McCans, shortstop Luis Penate, Jr., Miami, Fla.), first baseman Dusty Maggs (Jr., Sattelite Beach, Fla.), third baseman Rhys Roberts (Sr., Parkland, Fla.) and catcher Matt Fisher (Sr., Sunrise, Fla.) each collected an RBI in the inning.

Nova Southeastern added three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, with the big hit being a two run homer off of the bat of Valencia. The Sharks scored five more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning before the game was called.

Sophomore lefty Chris Hamper (Melbourne, Fla.) earned the win on the mounds for NSU, pitching five innings and allowing only one earned run on two hits. Junior James Martinez (Hollywood, Fla.) threw two innings of hitless relief.

The Sharks remain at home to host Delta State in a doubleheader at 1 pm on Saturday, February 6th as part of the NIKE/OTS Challenge.
