9th Inning Rally Propels NSU to 10-9 Win Over St. Thomas

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Feb. 9, 2010) The Nova Southeastern University baseball team put together a ninth inning rally to defeat St. Thomas (Fla.) 10-9 in action at the NSU Baseball Complex on Tuesday evening. The win improves the Sharks record to 2-3 on the season while St. Thomas falls to 1-4.

St. Thomas scored four runs in the top of the first inning off of Sharks starter Torey Ekey (Jr., Merritt Island, Fla.). Nova Southeastern knotted the score at four apiece in the bottom of the inning, scoring three times on a home run from first baseman Dusty Maggs (Jr., Satellite Beach, Fla.) and once on a RBI single from Jonathan Escarza (So., Miami, Fla.).

Ekey settled down from there, holding the Bobcats scoreless over the next two innings while NSU struck for a run on a RBI groundout from catcher Michael Hartley (Jr., Davie, Fla.) to take the lead in the bottom of the third inning.

The Bobcats applied more pressure on NSU in the fifth inning, scoring three runs off reliever Anthony Nalepa (Jr., Miami, Fla.). The Sharks countered in the bottom of the sixth inning, re-taking the lead by scoring three runs. Left fielder Nikko Echevarria (So., Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia) drove in a run on a RBI single while Maggs added two more RBI on a double to left-centerfield.

A sacrifice fly off NSU's Isaac Hicks (Jr., Ft. Myers, Fla.) tied the score once again in the top of the seventh inning. The Bobcats took the lead in the top of the ninth by taking advantage of an NSU error to score a run.

Sharks shortstop Luis Penate (Jr., Miami, Fla.) took things in his own hands, leading off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run to tie the game. A hit, a sacrifice, an intentional walk and a hit later, NSU had the bases loaded with just one out in the inning. Head coach Michael Mominey called upon freshman outfielder Alex Marrero (Miami, Fla.) to pinch-hit and he delivered, singling to right centerfield to provide the walk-off victory for the Sharks.

Sean Tighe (So., Hobe Sound, Fla.) earned the win, allowing an unearned run in an inning of work. Third baseman Rhys Roberts (Sr., Parkland, Fla.) had four hits for the Sharks while Maggs provided five RBI to lead the offensive attack.

Nova Southeastern travels to St. Augustine, Fla. to play the Flagler Saints in three games this weekend, beginning with a single game at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 12th.
