Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Mar. 16, 2010) The Nova Southeastern University baseball team rolled to a 12-6 win over #20 Franklin Pierce in action on Tuesday evening at the NSU Baseball Complex. The win improves the Sharks record to 10-14 on the season while Franklin Pierce falls to 9-2.
The Sharks matched Franklin Pierce with a run in the second inning. Junior shortstop Luis Penate (Miami, Fla.) drove in junior center-fielder Matt Seese (Ocala, Fla.) with a double down the left-field line.
A two run homer in the top of the third inning put the Ravens up 3-1. NSU responded in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring seven times on five hits and one Franklin Pierce error. Junior first baseman Dusty Maggs (Satellite Beach, Fla.) had the big hit of the inning, driving in two runs on a RBI double to right-centerfield.
NSU added two insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Junior starting pitcher Sean Koecheler (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing just two earned runs. Koecheler struck out six and walked two.
Senior second baseman Eric McCans (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) led the Sharks at the plate, going 3-5 with two runs scored and a RBI. Penate, sophomore designated hitter Nikko Echevarria (Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia), senior right-fielder Brayan Valencia (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and Maggs each had two hits for NSU. Seese walked four times, scored three runs and stole two bases.
Sean Keeler took the loss for the Ravens, allowing six earned runs in four innings.
NSU remains at home, hosting Adelphi at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17th at the NSU Baseball Complex.
