Lake Worth, Fla. (Mar. 23, 2010) The Nova Southeastern University baseball team was defeated 8-0 by Palm Beach Atlantic at Dave Manzo Field in action on Tuesday evening. The loss drops the Sharks to 15-15 on the season while Palm Beach Atlantic improves to 9-10 on the season.
The Sharks and the Sailfish were locked into a pitcher's duel over the first three innings as neither team could establish a rally or score a run. Palm Beach Atlantic broke through off NSU starter James Martinez (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring five runs on five hits. The big hit of the inning was a two-out, three run homer by left fielder Neil Hardon.
Palm Beach Atlantic added three runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sailfish third baseman Johnny Herrera hit a bases clearing triple off the wall in left field to drive in two runs.
Martinez took the loss for NSU, allowing eight runs on 10 hits in five and two-thirds innings pitched. Logan Thomas earned the win for PBA, allowing just four hits and no runs in seven innings.
The four NSU batters to register a hit were junior shortstop Luis Penate (Miami, Fla.), senior right fielder Brayan Valencia (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), junior designated hitter Haven FitzSimmonds (Loxahatchee, Fla.) and senior catcher Matt Fisher (Davie, Fla.).
The Sharks return home to host Southern New Hampshire at 6 pm on Wednesday, March 24th at the NSU Baseball Complex.
