Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Mar. 26, 2010) An eighth inning home run by junior catcher Haven FitzSimmonds propelled the Nova Southeastern University baseball team to a 3-2 win over Rollins in Sunshine State Conference action at the NSU Baseball Complex on Friday evening. The win improves the Sharks to 17-15 overall and 2-5 in SSC play while the Tars fall to 20-11 and 4-3 in SSC play.
With the score tied at two apiece and with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, FitzSimmonds (Loxahatchee, Fla.) blasted a 2-1 pitch from Rollins reliever Danny Clark over the right field fence to put the Sharks ahead 3-2.
Relievers Sean Tighe (So., Hobe Sound, Fla.) and Sean Albury (Jr., Nassau, Bahamas) shut down Rollins in the top of the ninth to secure the victory. Albury claimed his seventh save of the season.
Sharks starting pitcher Nick Avila (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) earned the victory, allowing just two runs on six hits in eight innings. He improved to 4-3 on the season with the win.
Senior All-America right fielder Brayan Valencia (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) went 2-4 with two RBI at the plate for Nova Southeastern.
The two teams resume their SSC series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 27th at the NSU Baseball Complex.
