WINTER PARK, Fla. (Mar. 26, 2010) The Nova Southeastern softball team dropped a heartbreaker to the No. 23 Rollins Tars (24-4, 3-1 SSC) Friday night in Winter Park, 3-2.
"It was a good game, we just didn't convert on our opportunities," said Head Coach Lesa Boneè. "It was a well played game offensively, defensively and pitching wise."
The Sharks (27-10, 5-2 SSC) were led by Laura Saladrigas (Fr., Hollywood, Fla.) who hit the second home run of her career. The homer over the left field fence drove in all two of NSU's runs and tied the game in the fourth inning. Saladrigas ended the game 1-for-3 at the plate.
It was a scoreless game going into the third inning but Rollins scored two runs with a centerfield bomb from Christine Roser. The first two Shark batters in the fourth weren't able to reach base, but Jessica Hernandez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) kept the inning alive on a walk. With a 2-1 count, Saladrigas put the Sharks back in the game with her 13th RBI of the season.
The Tars' Jessica Moreland led off the bottom of the fourth and hit a game-winning home run on the first pitch she saw. The Sharks stranded two runners on base in each of the final three innings.
In the seventh, Dani Caron (Sr., Wellington, Fla.) pinch hit but was hit by pitch. Patty Rivero (Sr., Miami, Fla.) reached on a walk and both runners were advanced by a sacrifice bunt by Noemi Luciani (Sr., Miami, Fla.). With two outs on the board, Brittany Phillips (Jr., Seminole, Fla.) grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.
Devin Higginbotham (Jr., Palatka, Fla.) pitched well and only allowed four hits. She struck out four batters and only walked two. Her record drops to 6-3 on the season.
The Sharks will continue their weekend series at Rollins Saturday, Mar. 27 at 1 pm.
