Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Mar. 4, 2010) The Nova Southeastern University baseball team was bested 9-8 by Barry in action at the NSU Baseball Complex on Thursday evening. The loss drops the Sharks to 9-10 on the season while Barry, who has won eight straight, improves to 8-5.
Barry took advantage of two walks and two hits to score a run in the top of the first inning off NSU starter Ryan Whelan (Jr., Boca Raton, Fla.). Whelan reduced the damage by inducing an inning ending double play with the bases loaded.
The Sharks scored three runs on three hits and three Barry errors in the bottom of the first inning to lead 3-1. Senior third baseman Rhys Roberts (Parkland, Fla.) had a RBI single in the inning.
Barry knotted the score at three apiece in the top of the fourth inning, scoring on a single and two doubles.
NSU took the lead right back in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly from senior designated hitter Eric McCans (Pembroke Pines, Fla.).
The Buccaneers responded in the top of the fifth by scoring a run to tie the game and scored three runs in the top of the sixth to lead 7-4.
A sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Luis Penate (Miami, Fla.) and a run scored on a Barry error drew the Sharks to within one run in the bottom of the sixth. Barry answered once again in the top of the seventh, scoring two more runs to lead 9-6.
The Sharks managed to score two runs on two hits in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't break through to tie the game.
Whelan took the loss for NSU, allowing six runs on nine hits in five and one-third innings pitched.
Sophomore centerfielder Chris Hamper (Melbourne, Fla.) led the Sharks at the plate, going 3-4 with two runs scored. Roberts and junior first baseman Dusty Maggs (Satellite Beach, Fla.) had two hits apiece for NSU.
The Sharks remain at home to host Palm Beach Atlantic at 7 pm on Friday, March 5th.
