NSU Softball Finishes Wolves Invitational With Back-to-Back Wins

Sharks now 18-6 overall

Dana Bergner
CARROLTON, Ga. (Mar. 7, 2010) - The No. 14 Nova Southeastern softball team completed the West Georgia Wolves Invitational with a 5-1 overall record. The Sharks (18-6) closed out the weekend with wins against the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes, 2-0 and the Augusta State Jaguars, 2-1 in a nine inning game.

The Sharks were able to escape the Jaguars when Dana Bergner (Sr., Palm Harbour, Fla.) hit a walk off hit to left field in the bottom of the ninth. Lauren Lopez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) scored the game winning run and also had her team's only other RBI.

Laura Saladrigas (Hollywood, Fla.) continued her strong play at the Wolves Invitational and shutout the Hurricanes in a complete game. She struck out three batters while allowing only four hits. She improved her overall record to 2-0.

The Sharks were in a tight game against the Hurricanes, but they played economically and took advantage of their opportunities. They struck first in the opening inning when Lopez drove in the first run of the game. Rachel Talenfeld (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) reached base on a catching error and was driven home by Lopez's RBI standup double. Lopez later almost scored herself but was called out at the plate on a controversial call.

NSU would put up its only other run the very next inning. Brittany Phillips (Jr., Seminole, Fla.) led off the second and reached on an error by the third baseman. She was put into scoring position by a Bergner single and was driven home on a sacrifice fly from Patty Rivero (Sr., Miami, Fla.).

The Sharks were scoreless for the remainder of the game and only had two more hits. The Hurricanes were never given an opportunity to climb back into the game as the Shark pitching and defense was firing on all cylinders.

The Sharks were challenged by the Jaguars who did not give up many opportunities. The Sharks could only muster up two hits in the first three innings, but got on the board in the fourth. Talenfeld earned her team's third hit of the night and eventually stole second and third base. Lopez hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field that gave the Sharks their only run in the first seven innings. The Sharks would put two more runners on in the fourth inning but could not drive them home.

The Sharks only had one hit over the next four innings, a single from Sarah Hart (Jr., Newburgh, Ind.). The Jaguars hit a game tying home run in the sixth inning, but could not put together anything else. The Jaguars had two opportunities with a runner placed on second but were shutdown by the Shark defense.

In the ninth inning, Lopez was placed on second base and was moved over when Jessica Hernandez hit a leadoff bunt single. Brittney Lamb (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) was later walked which loaded the bases for Bergner's game winning hit to left field.

The Sharks will return to action this Wednesday, Mar. 10 when they play a double header against Northwood in West Palm Beach at 2 pm.
