Fisher Delivers Game Winning Hit In Sharks 5-4 Come From Behind Victory Over Saint Leo

NSU Rallied From 4-1 Deficit To Earn 16th Consecutive Home Win

(Apr. 16, 2010)  Senior catcher Matt Fisher delivered a game winning hit with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Nova Southeastern University baseball team defeated Saint Leo on Friday evening at the NSU Baseball Complex. The win, NSU's 16th consecutive at home, improves their record to 27-17 on the season and 9-7 in Sunshine State Conference play while Saint Leo falls to 17-28 and 4-12 in SSC play.

Nova Southeastern grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single up the middle from junior designated hitter Haven FitzSimmonds (Loxahatchee, Fla.).

Saint Leo responded with two runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Lions added two unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning to lead 4-1.

Sharks starting pitcher Nick Avila (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) held Saint Leo at bay from there, holding the Lions scoreless over the next four innings.

NSU began a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning with back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. With the bases loaded and the Sharks trailing 4-3 with two outs, senior catcher Matt Fisher (Sunrise, Fla.) delivered a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield to complete the NSU comeback.

Junior closer Sean Albury (Nassau, Bahamas) set the Lions down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth inning to earn his ninth save of the season.

Avila earned the win, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits in eight innings. He struck out six to improve to 6-3 on the season.

Senior third baseman Rhys Roberts (Parkland, Fla.) extended his hit streak to 11 games by going 2-3 at the plate with a run scored and a walk.

The Sharks and Lions will complete their three game SSC series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm on Saturday, April 17th at the NSU Baseball Complex.
