Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Apr. 24, 2010) The Nova Southeastern University baseball team split a doubleheader with Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Baseball Complex. The 13-9 loss and 6-4 win makes the Sharks record 30-19 on the season while the Sailfish now stand at 17-20.
Despite scoring nine runs on ten hits, the Sharks could not come away with the game one victory. They were led at the plate by senior outfielder Brayan Valencia (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), who went 2-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Valencia hit his sixth home run of the season in the eighth inning.
Senior third baseman Rhys Roberts (Parkland, Fla.) was 2-5 with a RBI to extend his hitting streak to 15 games. Junior outfielder Matt Seese (Ocala, Fla.) also had two hits in the game for NSU.
The bright spot on the mound for NSU was junior Nick Avila (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), who pitched four and one-thirds scoreless innings of relief. He struck out seven while allowing just four hits.
The Sharks responded to win the second game 6-4. NSU found itself down 2-0 after three innings but knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth inning on three hits.
NSU took control of the game in the fifth inning, scoring four times to lead 6-2.
Outfielder Nikko Echevarria (Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia), Valencia, Roberts and first baseman Dusty Maggs (Jr., Satellite Beach, Fla.) each had two hits apiece. Roberts extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a single to lead off the second inning.
Junior Isaac Hicks (Ft. Myers, Fla.) earned his team leading seventh win of the season by pitching five innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Junior closer Sean Albury (Nassau, Bahamas) pitched the final two innings to seal the victory.
The Sharks remain at home to host Florida Memorial at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27th at the NSU Baseball Complex.
